Unable to sleep for pain in face. Neuralgia? What, if anything, can I do?

Im currently in a hotel, halfway through a weeks hiking holiday. I have terrible face pain. I can't sleep for it. Analgesics do nothing. I don't think it's dental as I've had this pain before, though nothing like it is today and the dentist when I saw him before thought it was a sort of nerve pain. That ties in with paracetamol and ibuprofen not easing it as apparently they don't work on nerve pain? I've had both today with no affect.

The pain is on one side of my face. It can intensify and reach down my neck or go into that side of my tongue or ears. Then, just as easily, it can lessen. No obvious reason why it intensifies or lessens.

Dh is with me. He said just try to sleep when it lessens, and i did nod off for 20 mins or so but his snoring woke me! He usually uses a CPAP machine but this room does not have a socket next to the bed so he can't use it tonight.

I am going out of my head with the pain and the inability to sleep. We hiked over 15 miles today and I need to sleep! Is there anything else I can try for this pain? Does anyone else recognise what it might be?

Sorry if I have rambled. Im so tired and so much in pain.

I have had simular, chiropractor said it is a nasty little deep nerve causes a lot of discomfort. This nerve sits in between the neck and shoulder and effects the ear hence the ear hurting and neck .After minupulation she said get a cold maybe ice flannel put on for 15mins so try that behind the neck , then a hot flannel, this helped me, if your in a town or walking to another try and find a chiropractor, instant relief.got any ibuprofen gel?

It does sound like neuralgia. You should see a neurologist when you can. You can have a Fiesta MRI to see if there is anything obvious (eg an artery too close to a nerve) but good chance nothing will show.

Gabapentin or Pregabalin may help as preventatives, and there are other options I haven’t tried.

Some people go to the ER / A&E when they get a full blown attack - I believe they treat with steroids and maybe muscle relaxants? My neurologist prescribed me Tramadol to take but it’s long enough since I had a full blown attack that I haven’t tried it.

It’s like no other pain - sending sympathies.

Maybe Trigeminal Neuralgia.
