Threadworm hell - when did it stop for you?!

I am interested to hear from seasoned parents about when their children finally outgrew threadworm infections. I am currently at my wits end because my DS (10) has had recurrent threadworms for the last year. He's always seemed a bit prone to them but this time I really don't know what to do. I follow all the advice re medication for all of us and hygiene/cleaning etc, all of which used to work when he was younger, but this year we just can't get rid of them. I know it's reinfection because of the timings of the infections - on this occasion (discovered this eve he has them yet again) he's only been back at school for 3 days since the summer hols so I can't even blame the school, he must have been reinfected at home. When you research online, there are hundreds of people who say they've had them for years, even most of their lives and can't get rid of them, which is terrifying. I am going to speak to our GP to see if there's anything else I can try but just wondered if anyone can share what worked for them and give me any hope that my DC will stop getting these bloody things at some point?! Anyone?? 😭

My dd had them constantly and what worked in the end was eating lots of pineapple, there’s other foods that can help clear worms but pineapple really sorted it for my dd.

Think she was around 10/11yo then and never had them since, likewise never had nits once secondary school age.

I had them for ages as a child and the medicine seemed to work and then they'd be back. We weren't sure if reinfection or new problem each time.

I dont recommend it but a prolonged case of norovirus really does wonders at ridding you of them as it proper cleans you out, its been 20ish years since I last had them.

@Girliefriendlikespuppies thank you! How much pineapple did she eat and for how long?! I think a pp might have been correct that rather than reinfection, the medication just actually isn't clearing the infection properly in the first place. DS complained of itching again on Friday - 6 days after the first dose of Ovex - and I checked him and found live worms again. So it's just not working. It was incredibly dispiriting as I had spent the whole bloody week cleaning the house and doing laundry to rid us of the things and apparently they are happily breeding away without a care in the world despite my best efforts! 😭

Oh gosh OP, I don't know what to say. I know my mum had them relatively recently and thought she might have got them via a village fete she attended. But for her the treatment worked.

But the reason we were talking about it is because I had an itchy bottom for about 2.5 years and I could not find the reason. I take aged garlic for blood pressure and am now wondering if that sorted it out as I have now had a few blissful weeks of non-itchy nights!

But I had also bought some liquid chlorophyll. I didn't have to use it but it is against parasites and I wonder if it might be worth a try as it was my next port of call. You can get it from Victoria Health here: https://victoriahealth.com/liquid-chlorophyll/

Maybe the prep medication for a colonoscopy (without the procedure!) would work ;)

@HotToast I can’t remember exactly how much but she ate some every day for at least a week and then once or twice a week for ages! Apparently pineapple has tiny spikes in it that kill the worms. Luckily my dd really likes pineapple 🙈😂
