Anyone had a dermoid cyst during pregnancy

MamaB12 · 27/08/2026 17:44

posting on here to see if anyone has been in a similar situation.
im currently 12 weeks pregnant and have a dermoid cyst from what iv researched these cysts do not go on their own without surgery. I’m due my first dating scan tomorrow for this pregnancy and i’m super nervous they are going to tell me it’s grown or malignant😩.
The dermoid cyst was found in April when i had a US for my previous miscarriage. Dermoid complex cyst 3.4cm ( from my notes)

Iv been googling high and low and don’t know if it’s made matters worse for me to be honest.
i feel like im going to walk into that room tomorrow and just burst into tears

Hello,
I'm going through something similar. They weren't sure if it was a dermoid cyst or endometriosis but the doc sounded pretty confident it was the former. Also discovered when I had a scan after MC , about 2 months ago.
I'm now pregnant again. When I spoke to the doc about the cyst the other day, he sounded very breezy about it and made it sound like nothing to worry about it , even when I told him i was pregnant- so Ive tried to put it out my mind altogether. I really hope you get some reassurance tomorrow xxx

i was given a follow up appointment but i ended up finding out im pregnant so i just didn’t go because i knew id be getting scanned throughout the pregnancy anyway.
I went to my GP and asked for my notes about the cyst and he was concerned either, i was kind of left in the dark about it. The midwife at the time who scanned me also wasn’t concerned. I do sometimes get aches occasionally or just little twinges but really hard to pin point if it is the cyst or just pains you get during pregnancy🤷🏻‍♀️. xxx

I have dermoid cysts on both my ovaries found whilst going for fertility investigations. mine are similar size to yours.
They measured them at each of my scans to ensure they weren’t growing, as the pregnancy hormones can cause them to increase in size. At my 20 week scan they thought they had doubled in size and did discuss removing them 3 months post partum if they were painful (the don’t do surgery unless over 5cm), but because they have to shave them off, there’s the risk of losing part of the ovary so they weren’t keen if still wanting more children.

i ended up needing a c-section (unrelated to dermoids) and I asked them to check them during surgery. They had in fact remained the same size as pre-pregnancy so not sure what they measured at my 20wk scan.

i will probably end up asking for them to be removed eventually as they cause pain around ovulation.

sounds positive, thank you.
yes i am worried incase the cyst has grown but i guess ill never know till i have the scan! i do get some twinges but im not sure if it is from the cyst or just pregnancy pains. i am being consultant led this pregnancy due to previous labor complications so i will be asking for them to remove the cyst at the same time!
did your cysts grow much during pregnancy? did you need an MRI or frequent scans?

I had a 10cm+ dermoid cyst discovered and then removed during my last c section. No one was the least bit concerned about it, and I got the impression it wasn’t unusual.

They didn’t grow at all in the pregnancy. I had extra scans as consultant led and IVF pregnancy rather than because of the dermoids. But at my 20 week scan they said if I didn’t have the additional scans booked in they would have offered an extra scan to check the cysts later on in pregnancy as if they grow too big, there’s the risk of torsion, which is an emergency and the ovary needs to be removed.

Hopefully it will be fine and the cyst won’t cause any issues during pregnancy.

hoprfully mine haven’t grown then. i didn’t know if pregnancy caused them to grow.. iv read all sorts online! yeah i’m really scared of torsion happening but also read that when the baby grows it causes for the cyst to be squished which less chance of torsion happening or could be wrong.

I drove myself mad googling “dermoid cysts in pregnancy” and found all sorts! I needn’t have worried!! Every gynae consultant I saw was not worried about them. They must be common.

Hi all, the scan went amazing i’m measuring 12+6d & no cyst was found on either ovaries so maybe it wasn’t a dermoid cyst? the sonographer was amazing and she explained everything even down the baby! she was really knowledgeable and wasn’t concerned about anything, both ovaries looked perfect.

well, I have a little boy who is six and when I was pregnant with him, I had no cyst present then that’s why when they told me last time that I had a dermoid I was really shocked.
i remember when they found the cyst at my miscarriage scan then they scanned me again a week later & couldn’t see the cyst and same again today she couldn’t find it, i wonder if they did actually misdiagnose me and it was a functional cyst?xx
