Gargling with coke can help.

I get them in 1 of my tonsils and sympathise.

I have an elaborate set up when needed to remove them. I can't say this is the correct thing to do, but has worked for me for 20yrs without infection or other issues. I only need to do this a few times a year.

-I have a head torch and mirror which I sit on a table. I angle the mirror and head torch so I illuminate the tonsil
-An empty bowl underneath my mouth an a tissue nearby
-I use warmed, sterile saline in a new syringe. (no needle on the end, just a 10ml, plastic syringe)
-I use a cotton bud to gently pull back the tonsil, I have a tiny flappy bit. When I pull it back, I can see the stone/s.
-I then gently syringe some water into the socket and the stones get washed into the bowl underneath

I suffer awfully with tonsil stones, especially on one side. I tend to just pick mine out with a cotton bud when they are ‘ripe’. I’m always gentle and usually get them first go.

Overall, things have been better for a few weeks since I changed antihistamines and the swelling on that tonsil has subsided.

I swapped to using an electric toothbrush, never had a tonsil stone since and I used to get them regular.

I get constant tonsil stones and I just use my finger or a small spoon handle to pop them out.

How do you do it without gagging?

ThisMauveTurtle · 27/07/2026 22:04

I get them too.
They eventually come out when I brush my teeth.
I have a water flossed too and I aim it at the stone.
It helps it move out

I have bought my kids to sail stone removing kits - you can use a jet of water to push them out. Less that ten quid on Amazon

I believe vitamin K is meant to reduce incidences of tonsil stones and I jave heard amazing things about the water jet things

I've had one before and that "something stuck in your throat" feeling is so annoying. Warm salt water gargles did help a bit for me. I'd be careful with cotton buds though as it's easy to make things worse. If it keeps happening or becomes painful, I'd get it checked by your GP.

I used to get them before having my tonsils removed, I could feel them with my tongue and would be able to use my tongue to push them out. My tongue doesn’t seem particularly long but now I think about it that’s probably a weird way to do it 😂
