What could be causing the back of my eye to hurt/sting?

I don’t experience this every day but quite often.

The only way I can explain it is that it feels as though the back of my eyeball has dried out and is sore and kind of stinging, it really doesn’t feel as though it’s from the front of my eye. It’s something I will usually wake up with and very rarely is it in both eyes although I do experience it in either one eye or the other just not at the same time.

Eye drops don’t appear to help and all my sight tests are always ok.

Any idea what could cause this?

I'm not a doctor, but if it's not something that's suddenly come on, and you've had it for a while, I'd either start with your GP or optician who can both refer you on to ophthalmology if needed. I don't know what eye drops your using for relief or if anyone prescribed them, but your symptoms do not sound like normal eyes. I would either book an optician's appointment specifically for this problem or call 111 for advice.
