Anyone's ds had an umbilical hernia? What to do?

I think my ds (14m) has an umbilical hernia. His tummy button used to be a perfect little bowl (even when he was the fattest lardy lump of a baby you ever did see) but just recently it looks like a bowl with a large scoop of ice-cream in it. the lump is soft and sometimes goes back in, depending how he's sitting, but if he's standing up it pokes out.

does that sound like a hernia to you?

what's the story with them? does he need a doc?

ds1 and ds2 both had umbilical hernias but they had them from birth. ds2 still has an 'outie'. I'd get it checked out if it's something new, just in case

He needs to see your GP who will then refer him to the hospital. I can't say if it's a hernia without seeing it but it does sound like one. It's just a bit on the intestine poping out of a hole in the wall that encases them. It's a common thing. My nephew had his repaired, I've seen some done in theatre. It's a quick procedure.

Both my ds's had these. Went to see a specialist, and he said they would settle down, and trhey did. They are horrible to lok at though, especially when they are screaming and their belly button is bulging.

Morocco, mine have both got outies too

thank you all ladies - it is new, so will take him to docs. hope we can let it settle rather than need an op.

his dad had one a couple years ago and even though it was quick day surgery, he was still a wreck for a good week - can't imagine doing that to a toddler!
