Adult umbilical hernia - is surgery necessary?

I have been diagnosed with an umbilical hernia today. No idea how long its been there... i had a laparoscope 19 years ago, also 2 csecs (10 and 8 years ago). Since going to the gym 6 months ago, I thought i was pulling my tummy muscles. The pain got worse recently to the point where last week i was doubled over on agony. I had an urge to push my belly in and when I did it went from a small hard lump to nothing and the pain was immediately gone.
Doctor examined me today and said I do have a small hernia but I can just wait and see how it goes.
Ive spoken to Aviva and they'll cover me for the surgery, but my question is - is it something I can just live with, without needing surgery? Is that a done thing? I have a feeling I've had it for years but it's only become apparent since gymming. But this may be naive of me!

I have one, confirmed by gastrology when I went about Ibs issues a few years back. I’m happy to live with it, I think it’s been there for over ten years now. But then I have a lot of other health issues and any surgery is complex for me. So I just accept it. It doesn’t actually cause me pain though; it’s just ugly looking and weird but I’m not bothered about that…..! I guess it depends on how much it bothers you. But yes potentially you can just live with it.
