Lower blood pressure

Has anyone managed to lower blood pressure by doing lifestyle things?

And if so what have you done that's either worked?

I never add salt to food when I get it. I don't add salt when I cook food either, even for seasoning.

So surely I can't eat a salty diet then if I'm not doing that?

Do you eat a diet with a lot of UPF? Even if moderately healthy types? Processed foods can be very high in salt.

Mine used to be low ish side of normal till I hit menopause and put on weight. It went very high 180/100. So I’m on meds now. It’s probably mostly hereditary. My mum was very slim and high blood pressure.

i lost a stone and a half, paid more attention to diet and started exercising, I think being active helps but you need serious amounts to make a difference in my experience.

mine is fairly steady at 140/ 80 now. Not great but not awful. I’ve got a stone to lose that’ll probably help.

are you on meds?

I know you said lifestyle. So I assume not medication. But as a suggestion, I take oral minoxidil and oral spironolactone for hair loss and was originally for high blood pressure. Its bought mine down. And will hopefully sort out the issue of my hairless in time.

Lifestyle changes can help if you have an unhealthy lifestyle. If you already have a healthy lifestyle (not overweight, plenty of exercise, don’t smoke, eat good food etc) then you are in luck - modern medicine has provided medication that reduces blood pressure for you.

See also high cholesterol, menopause, heart arrhythmias….

I'm not overweight. Although I'm trying to lose lbs but I'm not having much success.
I have never added salt to any of my food and don't add it when I'm cooking either. So surely I can't have that much salt in my diet?

Do you use any ready meals? They are often full of salt.

You need to read the labels of any processed foods you eat. not just UPF. You might be surprised how much salt is in things that don't really taste salty, like bread and cereal.

I've looked at the bread label and it just says salt medium.

Is black seed oil something you take in tablet form or something?

Mine didn't shift with the meds. Only marginally once I was on both sets, but still dangerously high.

I used to take the liquid form of black seed oil, link below. There are capsules if you prefer.

What were your significant diet changes?

Everything really - diet was awful before. I wouldn't have been able to do it and sustain it for 2 years without the support of the medication.

Removed most of the UPF/packaged sauces from my diet, limited sugar, removed fizzy drinks, limited crisps, minimise refined carbs.

Batch cooked soups (lots of lentil/bean based), protein focussed meals, lots of vegetables at every meal, fruit, added nuts and seeds, ate more oily fish.
