Holiday travel and codeine prescription

I was prescribed codeine 15mg for sciatica about 2 weeks ago. I am going on holiday to Italy on Sunday and figuring out what I need to do. Google tells me that I need a letter from my doctor with my passport number and I need to go through the Red Declare channel. What are other people’s experiences?

i think that in Europe you can take it in your checked in luggage in its original packaging. I have never declared medication, some other countries might be different.

thanks, that’s helpful! It only just occurred to me and I wonder if I’ll get a doctor’s note before Friday now.

You need either the letter, or a copy of the prescription

You also need to keep it in the original box with the label on!

I’ve been prescribed codeine for years and never had any issue travelling. Just pack it in your suitcase. You’ve been prescribed a low dose and I can’t imagine anyone being interested in you declaring it.

I have taken codine into Spain and the canaries and all I needed was it in my hand luggage in the original box and went through fine .

I just had a google and yes 1 of the things it said was Dr's letter, but the other answers was a prescription and the original box. So you can chose what you want to do, and not necessarily just a Dr's note.

When I went to Greece last year I took codeine in it's original box in my hand luggage - I had no problem.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 07/07/2026 08:25

All meds go in my hand luggage in box with my name, including codeine.
Flown all over the world and never been checked.
Never in checked luggage, bags can and do go missing .

for EU the box with the prescription sticker should be enough if it's in the same name as your passport.

however, if you are renting a car, check the t&c as you might not be abke to drive.

Hedgehogsaremything · 07/07/2026 09:33

this is all reassuring, thank you. No worries about driving as we aren’t renting a car there. (And I haven’t driven for the last two weeks.)

I take about 12 different drugs and have never had a problem.
I also have codeine with me when I travel.
Take a copy of your prescription in case you lose it or need more while away.
Make sure you declare to travel insurance.
Always carry drugs in your hand luggage/
