"funny turn" in 5week old - normal ? (trying not to be neurotic second time mum !)

Can't remember dd1 ever doing this, but dd2 (5 weeks) has (probably since day 1) done funny breathing (shallower, faster) while "smiling" and rolling her eyes back in her head (I can see this through her half open lids sometimes) - bit freaky but she otherwise seems fine and feeds and sleeps well. Usually seems to happen during or after a feed. I can 'rouse' her from these 'funny turns' by stroking her firmly or speaking loudly or whatever so it only lasts seconds, and she does it in her sleep sometimes too. Is this just one of those weird newborn things or should I be rushing to GP and worrying about epilepsy ?

My lovely maternity nurse said absolutely not to worry. My dd did this a lot when newish. As if watching through half-opened eyes and looking pretty spacey. They don't know they're doing it, apparently. One of those involuntary thingies newborns do to scare their mums....

Thank you to you and your lovely maternity nurse. Lucky you having a maternity nurse ! The midwives where I had dd2 were all so very very lovely I could have happily adopted one or all of them !

Oh, we had to remortgage but she was well worth it! It was my first so would have panicked about absolutely everything in those first couple of weeks. Am sure your dd2 is doing exactly the same as my dd1, who is now a non eye-rolling eight months.

From what my friends tell me you were lucky to have such nice midwives. I think many are so frazzled and overworked they don't have time to be super-lovely too...
