Has anyone had jerking movements with a vitamin B12 deficiency?

I have a vitamin B12 deficiency and I’m waiting to have more blood tests organised by my GP. I’ve felt very tired, headaches, constipation, hot flushes, but main thing I went to the doctor about was that I am experiencing jerking movements in my arms, legs and sometimes my head. Has anyone had the same symptom caused by low vitamin B12?

I have severe B12 deficiency, it has cost me my mobility due to peripheral neuropathy & I get electric shock type pains down my legs causing perks & spasms. Have you started on replacement injections? Often the loading doses & then 12 weekly injections aren't enough, I inject every other day myself, I recommend joining one of the B12 groups on Facebook as they have loads of information on where to buy the ampoules & everything else you need to know.

Thanks for replying. How often do you have these electric shock symptoms? I don’t get them every day which makes me wonder if it is even down to vit B12 deficiency or if that’s just something else. Was yours easy to get a diagnosis for?

I had electric zaps in my body though not everyday but I had eyelid spasm almost everyday until I had all six injections. My B12 level was 71.

Ask them to check vitamin D as well, many GPs don’t these days, it’s not a routine test.
I didn’t get this with my low Vit B12, but I did when my vitamin D was low, and deficiencies can go hand in hand.

My vitamin D is low too. I’ve had my vitamin B12 tested again and it’s dropped further in 2 days. Does anyone have experience of levels and how quickly they can change from normal to deficiency?

Yes, these are symptoms of Vit B12 deficiency. Levels don't matter once you start. It will go up significantly, but it will take longer for you to absorb it to a proper level. For me, it took a couple of months to really start to feel better.

Also, just to add in case, antidepressants, ssri, can cause lamb jerking.

Thanks, I do take antidepressants but have been on them much longer than when these symptoms started. My GP has called the jerking movements “convulsions” which I’m not sure about. To me, this sounds as though the doctor suspects something like epilepsy but then their investigations have been sidelined by the discovery of vitamin B12 deficiency. It’s all quite confusing.

Oh, that’s interesting. Did you have to stop taking them?
