Is this arthritis? What is your pain like please?

I have had strange pains and sensations in the side of my foot and ankle for the past couple of weeks. At times these are causing me to hobble. For two days now these have subsided but I’m now getting strange pains in the base of my thumb upwards - some feel like an electric shock shooting up it and it also feels barely bruised, although it’s not. Could these be arthritis? What does it feel like for those who have developed it?
I’m 62 and my mum had arthritis so it seems likely it could be it but I’m not sure. I’m fit, not overweight and generally healthy.

The thumb pain sounds exactly like arthritis. That shooting and almost burning pain is what I have in most my joints on my hands, arms and shoulders.

What shoes do you wear?...sketchers or 9verly cushioned causes foot pain as do flip flops.
Low estrogene can cause problems but the joints struggle to use replacements. High strength tumeric, ginger and black pepper really helped me.... Nutrition geeks. worked really quickly 9n hips ( struggled up stairs or to lie on my side) hands ...arthritis and knee...would lock up.

My hip is at times a shooting pain down into my leg, heavy feeling into my leg (other parts start to compensate) hip is generally a sharp pain and then a general feeling of discomfort when I’m sat still. Some days are minimal others are bad. I’m 48, fit and not overweight, turmeric and HRT no help at all to me for this

Thanks @jannier and @RoachFish thats very helpful. I don’t wear cushioned shoes at all or flip flops very often.
Will try the supplements you mention. This has been a bit of a shock as the thumb pain means I can’t hold or grip things properly. Thanks again.

Mine started in fingers first. Like a crushing pain as though they were trapped in a door. My fingers are now very disfigured and won't bend.

I had used different Tumeric before with no effect I've also had steriod in my hip before first work about a year second didnt really help third was good for about 18 months. My hands were really bad they 2anted me on methotrexate before Covid i didnt take it . Ive had steroid in the thumb once pain started to return but at 5he moment on the Tumeric im holding it off. Id really try different 9nes...the natures Blend black seed was quiet good too but tried the nutrition geeks the last two times.

I don't recommend you rely on quack remedies get it investigated.
I admit to trying all the things that people will suggest from tumeric to gluten free. Absolutely nothing made any difference. I strongly believe that if I had had proper treatment earlier I wouldn't have the loss of function and deformed fingers that I have now.
I have RA and OA.

HollyHoly · 31/05/2026 11:59

The thumb problem sounds like it could be OA. But your description about your ankle is too vague. It could be a ligament/tendon problem. So no evidence on the face of it that the two are linked. If you are hobbling or having to adapt the way you walk then I would look into this with a physiotherapist.

My GP insists that there is no treatment for arthritis in hands and feet, and very little for major joints such as knees and hips before you are in excruciating pain and need a joint replacement. He has now barred me from making any further appointments regarding arthritis in my thumbs which has already been confirmed by xray. I know this is rubbish but the only way I will get any treatment for it is to go private.
