DH has a swollen parotid gland. It’s cause trigeminal neuralgia and Drs given him antibiotics (with a second one in case the other didn’t work). This morning his fever is down but the lump on his face is worse. Dr said to go to A & E if the swelling got worse. DH considering it though his breathing is ok. Does he need to go to A & E or would you give the new antibiotic a bit more time (he switched as it wasn’t getting better). He is having trouble eating and swallowing is sore.

I'd give 111 a call to get their advice before spending 4 hours in A&E. I hope he gets relief soon one way or another.

Any trouble swallowing straight to A&E. Can progress rapidly to Ludwig's Angina which is very dangerous. I am a dentist.

Yes he should go.

Dr had said to ignore calling 111 if it got more swollen. He feels he’s slightly better just the swelling is bigger! He is under significant pain relief right now with opioids so mmmm. Think he probably should looking at the ludwig thing.

He was told to go back if the swelling was worse for a good reason. He needs to follow the medical advice given or risk serious consequences. Splitting hairs or trying to justify not going is silly.

Follow the medical advice given
