If it is quite bad - the whole of the nail - you need to get something on prescription as the over the counter stuff won't be enough.

I have one at the moment and have been taking terbinafine for 7 weeks but it doesn't look remotely better - am so pissed off with it

I have it in my big toe on the left foot. When I went to the GP he said that the medication used to treat it causes liver damage and that if I didn't like the look of it paint my nails!

I decided to go down a different route and was advised to apply tea tree oil daily and keep exposed as much as possible. This worked a treat until I didn't do it for ten days while away in January. I painted my nails for my holiday and when I took the varnish off it had spread to the whole nail.

I am continuing with the tea tree. It is slow but working. HTH

tea tree worked for me as well, but you have to try and get it under the nail to where the infection is. I cut off all the infected bit (about half the nail)but you might not be as hardcore as me

on the diet drs inside and out they recommended pure coconut oil. It can be slow working but is completely safe and natural and will clear fungal nail. depending on how bad the problem it will take up to a year. get 'cold pressed' - it has anti fungal/ anti bacterial properties and should be applied to the skin.

Which treatment causes liver damage? Is it something you take orally? I have to paint my nails with something everyday, hope that's not causing liver damage.

SheherazadetheGoat · 20/06/2008 22:44

doctor can perscribe paint on stuff which works. takes as long as the the nail takes to grow out. you can't use nail polish during treatment which is a bummer but better than a fungal toe.

found this when I was looking into coconut oil orginally. www.healthypages.co.uk/forum/archive/index.php?t-13579.html mentions tea tree oil, liver damage and coconut oil + more.

My son had this, years ago. Got something to paint on from the doctor.
