Severe lower back pain after hip replacement, has anyone else had this?

Hi,
I had a hip replacement 19 days ago.
The pain in the wound once the spinal block wore off was much worse than I thought it would be but now the wound is healing it’s becoming more bearable.
My problem now is the unbearable pain in the small of my back.
I can’t sit or lay down at all without being in agony.
Has anyone who have had hip replacements experienced the same thing?
Tia

My friend has recently had her hip done and has had issues with sciatica, apparently it’s quite common post op. Have you spoken to a health care professional about it?

fudgesmummy · 18/04/2026 21:14

That’s interesting @susiedaisy1912
I mentioned it to the nurse when I had my wound check on day 14.
She just vaguely said well I guess you’re probably walking and sitting differently now.
Dr Google says similar

Are you doing the exercises they gave you ?

There's a good group on FB. A guide to hip replacement a lot of members with issues like this.

DH had awful lower back pain post operatively and had many osteopathic treatments to support his body accepting the new normal.

Strangely the hip replacement actually meant his legs were the same length for the first time in his life at 66.

Four years later he now never gets sciatica that plagued him for the last 20 years.

I think your body has been working around your hip problems so long it is stuck in that mode when it is now unhelpful. As PP said, an osteopath might help.

Give it a bit more time @fudgesmummy, I've seen hip op done and it's quite brutal so your body was probably put under some strain. Recently had a very minor op under local anaesthetic, was only on operating table half an hour and could barely move after I was so stiff and ached for few days. Its totally flat and hard. Think about what your body would feel like if you were laid on a hard table for a couple of hours. Hope it improves soon.

Your body will have overcompensated for your hip. Now you’ve had the op it needs to find its new normal
