Has anyone else seen videos talking about a link between root canals and cancer?

I feel like I see videos pretty regularly on this and I have pretty much convinced myself it’s true and I’m going to get cancer. The video I just saw that triggered this thread was a post saying that Netflix had removed a documentary on this subject because the dental association were threatening to sue.

I have one root canal as a result of a dentist over filing my tooth underneath a veneer. I’ve had the root canal about twenty years.

You keep seeing videos on this because you keep watching them. Don’t get your medical advice from random videos on the internet. If you’re worried then speak to your dentist or read some medical journals. They only way you can guarentee to get cancer is to live long enough and then you will eventually develop it.

I’ve literally never heard or seen anything about this. It sounds like nonsense made up for clicks and you keep getting the videos because you keep watching them x

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 15/04/2026 20:12

I click past them but I guess they are coming up because I’ve watched a few of them.

Absolute tosh, stop disappearing down internet rabbit holes.

There is some evidence of gum disease and an increased risk of cancer so if you had a root canal and that included gum disease around the bad tooth it could be a bit of a cause, but that wasn't the root canal it was the reason for it. And I think it's a pretty tiny additional risk.

garlictwist · 15/04/2026 20:19

Well if you don’t get a root canal your tooth and face might get very infected, painful and dangerous. So which is worse? Load of shit.

ismiledather · 15/04/2026 20:45

I read something about this and was worried to have root canal as I’ve had cancer.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 15/04/2026 20:46

There’s a link between plaque, dementia and heart disease that’s actually real. Worry about that instead.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/04/2026 20:49

Even if they did cause cancer (which they don't, the higher levels of inflammation associated with gum disease, for example, are the main association with higher mortality), you'd die pretty quickly and far more painfully from a dental abscess - which you will almost certainly get if you leave a rotten tooth untreated - and would be in agonising pain from the fucked tooth in the intervening period.

If you're that worried, get the tooth pulled instead.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 15/04/2026 21:10

I wouldn’t say I’m hugely worried as I’ve accepted the risk, I just wondered if anyone has heard the same.

Oh this is very old news and completely debunked. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/root-canal-cancer/
Its the equivalent of saying 97% of people with terminal cancer have watched a television screen in their lives and therefore televisions cause cancer

FACT CHECK: 97 Percent of Terminal Cancer Victims Had Root Canals?

Has medical research established a link between root canals and terminal cancer?
