If you suspect Ds had balanitis (red sore tip of penis ) should you go to GP or can you get something over the counter ?

GP. Also try a warm bath with salt in it. DS had this and needed oral AB's. TBH I'm not sure if there is anything avaliable over the counter.

When ds had it we went to the GP, who prescribed chloramohenicol ointment for it (usually used for eye infections).

SoMuchToBits · 18/06/2008 18:07

Sorry, that should have been chloramphenicol. I think you can now buy Golden eye ointment (which contains chloramphenicol as the active ingredient) over the counter, but I would prefer that he is seen by GP, especially if he has not had it before.

Had this twice with ds1 - prescribed oral ab's first time, second time topical ointment (chloramph I think, same as other poster)
Third time she said try thrush ointment, it is usually caused by bubble bath or soap believe it or not - and avoid using things like that.
It was better within a day or two.

They were also threatening to send him to a consultant to have a look with a view to cutting something off, but as it didn't look like it was tight to me I said no ta! Last resort stuff imo.

She said watch out for balooning or dribbling - i know they all balloon a bit but if things are getting constricted and flow of wee isn;t good, it might need some help.
HTH!
