Help - am having severe allergic reaction to sore throat - has this happened to anyone else?!

I've just had a mild but irritating cough, but just as it was coming to the end, I've come up in the most vile nettle rash/urticaria all over my body. I have been a seething, itching mass of weals for the last 48 hours, and the top-end (and very expensive, so the nurse tells me) antihistamines are not working at all, never mind any creams. I itch so much that I've had about 6 hours sleep in the last three nights, and my face is swollen so that I look as though I've had a botched facelift.

To be honest I'm a bit scared; I've had a mild allergic reaction to the last two colds before this, but this time it is something else. So will it be even worse next time? Every time I talk to the doctors they remind me to call an ambulance if I have any problems breathing...

What can I do? The drugs don't work?! Has anyone else had this and sorted it out? Or even sympathy will do.

DS gets this when he is run down/ill and so many sympathies on their way to you

do you have problems breathing?

I think you need to get back to your GP ASAP

Thankyou for all the sympathy. It's one of those days where it would have been nice to call in sick to the office, just so I can tell someone down the phone all about it.

Yes, have talked to the doctor every day, and am going back in at lunchtime - but to be honest, I don't think they've got much else to offer! So I'm also trying to find a homeopath - paging emergency homeopath, it's quite funny really - as it's the sort of thing that they might be quite good at.

The only saving grace is that I have a ton of work on, so dd is at the childminder's for an extra morning this morning. Although that doesn't quite solve the problem of what I do with the ton of work...
