Eating garlic causing the worst bloating and stomach pain!

I LOVE garlic, never had an issue with it, but since having my baby girl 8 months ago my body doesn’t agree to it anymore! Would you say this is an allergy or intolerance… instant bloating and instant stomach pain, burping and heartburn and it makes me quite red in the cheeks and chest. This happens everytime I consume a lot of garlic, I even ate a whole clove with honey once when I had a cold and that was awful!

I have health anxiety and I do get worried about eating food that can cause a reaction, especially anaphylactic shock. Is this my body telling me I am now allergic to garlic and should stop or merely just a slight intolerance. How do you know allergic reaction from intolerance?

I only have to sniff garlic and I feel sick, it's ghastly and I have to read all labels and ingredients lists because all foods nowadays are laced with the vile stuff. I don't even believe it's that good for you.

I've come to the conclusion I have an intolerance to it, rather than an allergy,

It doesn't matter what it is. Just stop eating it!

Garlic is one of the highest fodmap foods (foods that naturally cause gas) alongside onions, apples etc. I’m sensitive and had to eliminate all fodmap foods at one point. Bodies can change dramatically with each pregnancy. I no longer tolerate dairy!

I’ve heard that garlic oil is a safe alternative for a lot of people who struggle to tolerate Garlic to still get the flavours - but not the types that have bits of actual garlic floating in it.

Look up FODMAP - it’s not allergies, it’s like IBS

My 15 yo daughter has always struggled with this. It’s weird though…sometimes she’s fine, other times it really upsets her tummy. She avoids it where possible. I think it’s quite common. Her dad’s the same.

Looks like intolerance, not allergy.
Your symptoms are digestive, not dangerous allergy signs.
Just avoid garlic for now unless severe symptoms happen.

Hormonal fluctuations can cause intolerances. I found things settled for me when my youngest was three (until peri reared its head). Women’s biology is a bit of a minefield.

I can't touch the stuff. It is one of the nightshade vegetables known to cause problems.

Garlic is an allium, like onions. It's not a nightshade plant.

When I had it I tasted garlic for about a day. I get reflux but it wasn’t like that - I can’t explain but it was like it had invaded my body! My ex colleague was the same. My DD uses it all the time and it stinks, weird as I loved the garlic bread smell!

AnotherSliceOfCakePlease · 17/03/2026 14:27

It’s one of the highest fodmap foods along with onions. If I ate it I think my body would self destruct :) I use garlic oil to get the flavour. I used to eat it with zero problems.

Ladyofwoods · 17/03/2026 21:42

I can’t eat it either. It gives me a really bad headache and I feel like I’ve got a hangover. It’s massively frustrating because it’s now hard to go out for meals. I rarely bother as it’s such a pain and my choices are hugely unlimited. Good for eating healthily though as ready meals are mostly out of the question!

I find it frustrating that, despite so many people seeming to have an intolerance to garlic, it is not included in the allergies list in restaurants. The only place I’ve ever seen it included was in Pizza Express!

Ineffable23 · 17/03/2026 21:46

Re FODMAP foods - there are lots of different categories and plenty of people only have an intolerance to one category. So e.g. I can't eat beans (galacto oligosaccharides) but I can eat everything else. So you might find it is just that you have an intolerance to.

BotterMon · 17/03/2026 21:50

Can't touch it since I had my daughter almost 36 years ago! Used to love it and eat it all the time. No idea what this Fodmap stuff is, but don't eat garlic or onions as neither agree with me.

MuggyBonehead · 17/03/2026 22:04

I love the taste of garlic but sadly can't eat it any more due to digestive issues. Ditto onion and anything containing gluten. It makes eating out very difficult. At home I eat gluten free, use garlic oil instead of actual garlic, low fodmap gravy etc.
