Sprained knee, crutches and all over body aches

I tripped on a rug at home Wednesday, had an awful night and couldn't walk properly on Thursday so DH whisked me off to Minor Injuries where an X-Ray revealed I had sprained the tendon on the outside of my knee.

they were very good and I was sent home with a list of exercises and crutches. The thing is the crutches have caused my whole body to stiffen and ache , so much so that my right bicep and shoulder have completely seized and I can't raise my arm.

I sound like such a whinger compared to the problems that other people have, but has anyone any ideas about how to alleviate the muscle strain and stiffness? I've gone from being so active to feeling like I'm about 102!!!

Sorry about your accident. A few suggestions:

Are your crutches at the right height for you and are you using them “correctly”?

Your upper body may be sore because you are suddenly using those muscles in a new way and they are not normally supporting your body weight like that - I assume the pain is “first session in gym after not going for a while”
sort of pain?

Can you do some upper body style stretching while seated - like Pilates style. There are some good short
ones on YouTube.

Massage from your partner maybe?

Hope you feel better soon.

Arnica homeopathy remedy is really good for brusing. Available in a tablet or cream. Hope you feel better soon x

Thanks @CocoaTea and @shellyleppard . It’s taken me so long to have a shower this morning and my shoulder and arm are so stiff and painful I have retreated to the sofa with ice packs and my lovely DH has volunteered to take our present over to my mum. We were originally going to have her over for lunch so in some ways I’m really glad that plan got shelved.

how did you land? is it definitely the crutches rather than that you've injured your shoulder during the fall too?

NeedWineNow · 15/03/2026 11:43

@Greybeardy i didn’t fall on the floor, I pushed a chair back and got up at the same time and hadn’t realised that it had got caught on the rug so I twisted and stumbled rather than going down so it’s definitely the crutches. I think I’ve taken all the weight on my shoulder whilst using them which has caused the problem. Doesn’t help that we live in a cottage with a downstairs bathroom so I had to use my crutches up and down the stairs in the night. It was so painful last night I slept downstairs on our blowup bed which made things a bit easier.

Ah, it’ll be fine….eventually!!
