My sister's just had very severe pneumonia (ended up in intensive care for a few days) - how long can she expect the recovery to take? and is there anything she should or shouldn't do to help herself back to full health?

eat well
take all drugs
rest rest rest
no smoking!!!!! Or being in smoky environment.
i was in intensive care for 6 days and financially HAD to go back to work after that BUT I was so rundown I ended up sicker and sicker.
nothing is worth permanent damage.
so rest rest rest
hope she is ok

thanks Piffle - how long after you were out of hospital did you feel back to normal-ish?

I felt ok-ish after three weeks. It helped to clear the chest to take up cardiovascular activities. However, I still, 2 months later get the odd wheeze

Definitely Piffle's advice to rest is so important. My pneumonia wasn't as serious as your sister's but I pushed it afterwards, didn't take it seriously enough, then got pneumonia again a year or so later - I don't think I'd ever properly recovered from the first one. It was worse the second time, which made my chest weak for years and years afterwards. She'll need to continue resting for quite a while after she is feeling okay and bored of sitting around. Poor her. Hope she makes a full recovery soon.

What is her lifestyle mim? I ask as this can dictate recovery times.
I relapsed within 8 weeks and nearly lost my life... Because I pushed it.
after that I lost masses of weight looked dreadful and suffered fatigue for 6-8 mths.

I was hospitalised a couple of years ago for a week with pneumonia and I remember that it took me a good six weeks to be able to walk without getting breathless and feeling pain when I did breath. It was quite a slow process and as already said rest is really important if possible.
