Unusual symptom of strange smells

Any suggestions of what this could point to?
I have very recently started experiencing unusual smells of cat or human urine - where there is no possibility that it is the case - sometimes when I was in the same place only hours before and there was no smell
I am under neurologist and they have recently ruled out MS, I am also waiting on rheumatology appointment as things seem to be pointing towards rarer varieties of auto immune/connective tissue disorders

Previous respiratory viruses or slightly infected/clogged sinuses can cause people to smell things that aren’t there.

I get it all the time. In my case the smell is cigarette smoke. It started about six months after my second bout of Covid a few years back.

mention It to your neurologist, they will probably want to rule out temporal lobe seizures if they haven’t already.

Thank you both
Today it was a smell of burning in my car just as I got home - was convinced there was a possible electrical fault as it was that hot wire type smell - thankfully DS was home and able to confirm there was no smell or problem - will mention at next neurology appointment

Good luck @JaceLancs

I have this every so often and I smell smoke or sometimes drains

Have you had a neurology review yet @JaceLancs?
What did they make of the smells?

JaceLancs · 19/03/2026 09:36

@pompomtiddly no not been for a review yet - I had a letter a few days ago about the results of the nerve conduction tests so assume review appointment will follow soon

I hope they get to the bottom of it. Good luck.

Do you have any other feelings/symptoms when you smell it?

Only asking as I have temporal lobe seizures as someone has mentioned above. With that though, I tend to get a Deja Vu, strong smell, a feeling of doom, wanting to cry etc, but I’m still aware throughout the whole thing. Just I know that the smell can be a symptom.
