My 9 mo ds fell down the stairs today :(

I was right by him and in the flash of an eye he just crawled off the edge and cartwheeled down. The most Godawful thing I've ever seen, it was in slow motion. It was only 8 steps and it is carpeted. He cried straight away and after a couple of minutes seemed fine, he giggled when I tickled him. He hasn't eated his tea tonight but he wasn't keen on his lunch (before the fall) as he's got a stinking cold. I rang my mum and she said to watch him, if he starts being really sleepy or sick to take him to casualty. He's asleep now anyway, he's really tired because of this cold. Have I done the right thing?

i think he'll be ok, aS U SAID, HE'D ALREADY NOT EATEN HIS LUNCH SO THE COLD IS PROBABLY AFFECTING HIS APPETITE ANYWAY. check on him in the n ight to put ur mind at rest.

My mum (she's not a doctor btw, just a fountain of all wisdom ) said to wake him before I go to bed, if he cries, he's fine. I just went in and in an over anxious parent kind of way prodded him gently and he whimpered a bit but went straight back to sleep. I've got the movement sensor on his baby monitor on, I haven't used that since my ultra paranoid first few weeks!

my 9mo ds fell off my bed yesterday, i was stood right there and he flipped himself. that sicky feeling is terrible headfairy, i know how u must have felt!

Purlease · 12/06/2008 20:14

The fact that he cried straight away suggests he wasn't concussed but as suggested just keep an eye on him. It's quite amazing how quick they can move once they get started!

I think he'll be fine as you said he was alert and behaving normally straight afterwards. It won't be his last fall down the stairs either, I'm 35 and I fall down (and up) regularly!

My dd fell off bed and hit her cheek on the bedside cabinet at 9 months, she cried but then went sleepy and wouldn't react so she had to go to hospital, they checked her over but by then she was fine, just a bruise on her face, I never slept all night checking she was breathing, I felt like we were the worst parents in the world.

oh thanks everyone, that's very reassuring. Won't stop me checking on him though every 20 minutes ;)

I posted about this not long ago as I managed to leave my stair gate open and my DD fell all the way down 14 steep stairs. Felt absolutely horrendous. During the evening I checked to see if I could rouse her every half an hour or so (just a gentle poke!) and I sept on her bedroom floor, which was probably a bit extreme! She was fine, of course!
