Anyone else with the flu?

I’ve read and heard about a strain but my goodness I’ve not ever felt so ill!

A week ago I went for walk with my toddler and came home and it hit, coughing, aches, headache and never been so ill where I’ve been in bed or sofa/ blankets

with 2 children and a husband who works and can’t really get time off work, I’ve been unable to even get off the sofa. Absolutely debilitating

I’m just posting for solidarity- anyone else with it?
called in sick, not had a day off in years as I normally battle though but day 6 and I’m fed up

I purchased a sinus rinse and that has really helped I wish I did it weeks ago, my GP recommended it.
just an idea for anyone struggling still. It’s worked so well for me.

@teentoddlermum would you mind sharing which rinse you’re using? Google comes up with sprays and rinses so not sure which to try.

teentoddlermum · 21/01/2026 11:27

This is the one I used

I’ve sent a pic, this is the one the GP recommended but I’m sure any rinses are fine, as long as there is a salt solution that comes with it, don’t use tap water always used cooled boiled water and the sprays are fine I actually had one but they don’t rinse like these do. I feel so much clearer I would definitely recommend

Yep, I’ve been laid up since last Tuesday. I feel absolutely awful and see no end in sight. Not sure where the weekend has gone and decided today I wasn’t fit enough to even open my laptop to work - totally unlike me. I now have a terrible chesty cough having gone through endless rolls of toilet tissue with the dreading nose drip - which has left me with cracked sore nostrils 😩

Sympathy for the sore nose! I keep a pot of rich lip balm next to the tissue box, and every time I blow my nose, put some balm on it. Still gets a bit sore, but not as bad. Get well soon everyone!

Agoddessonamountaintop · 21/01/2026 13:46

Thanks @teentoddlermum . Will get myself some. I find plain old Vaseline good for a sore nose @therockingbird ; also toilet paper is noticeably rougher than tissue paper. Man sized Kleenex for me, never the balsam/scented type.

Just an update - now in the middle of week 3 of this thing. I still have a cough - a productive one, but it's clear liquid, no sign of infection. I've stopped wheezing at night, which means I'm sleeping better. I'm still getting lightheaded a few times a day, and my energy levels aren't back to normal, but I can manage a few basic tasks - e.g. the dishwasher has been emptied a few times! I think I should be fully recovered by next Monday (well, I'm hoping to be).

teentoddlermum · 25/01/2026 10:29

I’m week three next Tuesday and I thought I was in the turn, but today I’ve woken up full of cough/snot/feel hot but no temperature and body aches! I can’t stop blowing my nose and there’s slight gunk but also running clear - I feel HORRENDOUS it’s like a horror story of not feeling better! I have two children and a husband I know is doing his best to cover what I normally do but I can tell he is getting fed up! Do I just carry on saying oh well it’s just another week ? I’m so fed up of feeling this unwell when I could handle getting better slowly- I feel I’m only doing tasks cleaning/cooking because I literally have to for the children - I feel so emotional and off today 😭

omg yes a week in- started last Sunday was walking home from the pub and it was cold and then from that I wasn’t able to stop shaking and warm up and downhill from there- extreme fatigue, unbelievable aches, sore throat, runny nose- excruciating headache, ears are CONSTANTLY ringing.

Now day 7 and I feel really sick which is a new symptom! Random question though since this I’ve put on 5lbs?! I haven’t had an appetite really but I’m also very very bloated today. Has anybody had this too?!

Keep going with the rinse if it helped you, take Vitamin D/C/B, sambucol, but especially D, which helps in respiratory infections.

I am on Week 5, and the mucus and cough are finally beginning to subside. But this is after four cups of honey/water per day, saline rinse, 2-3x steam inhalations, Jakemans lozenges and sleeping in an uncomfortably warm room.

I started wearing a mask each time I went outside as even a ten min walk to the supermarket caused the airways to get re-inflamed. I felt stupid but that’s helped as well.

Sounds awful! All I can say is that I’ve spoken to GP and pharmacist who have confirmed there are nasty viruses around. I can’t say I have in fact I’ve no appetite and lost 6lbs since Jan but I feel
ill with it so I don’t think that’s helped

This is me! Started Dec 27th, have the odd day when I think it might be getting better than bam, the next day back in bed. Tiredness, chesty cough, nausea and extreme tiredness. Had enough now.

6 weeks ill. Cough now gone but having trouble breathing. No appetite cannot taste anything. Runny nose. So so tired. Slept for 12 hours when I woke up felt like I had not slept at all. Ache all over. Wish it would all go away.

People are really suffering - awful! I saw my gp on Friday who said I have a chest infection, started on antibiotics on Saturday. It’s starting to lift a bit (the cough at least), but I wrenched my lower back coughing the other day and now I’m in agony with that. The uncontrollable fits in the night are now making me yelp out loud, and I hobbling stiffly around the place. Hopefully I can start some exercises to help it soon. Good luck everyone. 🤞

teentoddlermum · 26/01/2026 10:55

I’m back at the GP I did an extension on my fit
note as I cannot work feeling like this and they made me an appointment for a review…coughing up dark yellow mucus and still feel so unwell

Sorry to hear that.

Have you had a round of antibiotics?

Yes had some 2 weeks ago for 5 days the pharmacist said to go back to GP after 5 days as they may need to try another…saw GP who said it’s all viral so try a sinus rinse! So back here today and maybe will get another one - who knows I wasn’t doing anything else today 🤨just want this to go away and get back to normal !

You may be on the same trajectory as me. I was given 5 days of Amoxycillin on Dec 29; two weeks later, GP gave me a back-up 5 day scrip for Azythromycin which I had to take (3 days after ending the first one), as my cough relapsed aggressively.

Honestly don’t know if that second round helped at all. I think mine is viral as well, just only responded to heat.

But you do need a lot of rest which is obviously very hard with kids and work (and not going out in the cold).

teentoddlermum · 26/01/2026 11:33

I have been given a new antibiotics 7 days course
so fingers crossed

Again I just feel so sorry for the elderly or anyone living alone ☹️who may be feeling so unwell
@Sugarpopsiclethats the thing it may not even work but trying to be positive as she did say I was not on the best antibiotics for sinusitis and I am now so here’s hoping!
