Cut my thumb open on some broken glass, I could see some gross yellow and white stuff before it started bleeding, but I put a big plaster over it and it seems okay (this was 3 days ago), thing is everytime I take the plaster off and move my thumb around it opens up again . Its only about 2cm across in an L shape

What do you reckon to going and getting a stitch put in? or should I just cover with a plaster until it heals? Thing is with the plaster its gone all damp and gross

Could really do without the walk in centre today tbh

I would get to boots/other chemist and buy some steristrips, it will mean the wound can be sealed but not get sweaty under a plaster.

However if you are worried you could call A&E to see if they are busy.. they do have quiet times and you could be seen quickly?

WowOoo · 12/06/2008 13:48

If I were you I would go. Do you want it to heal properly or not?! Yellow/white could be fatty tissue, so sounds quite deep. Have you cleaned it properly?

Just go!

After two days it is too late to do anything as the edges will have started to heal and will not come together. So, nothing todo, it will heal but you may just get slightly larger scar.

ergh!!
I cut mine quite badly last year on the edge of a tin can. I bandaged it up and put a plastic bag over it when in the shower. It took AGES to heal up and felt really odd but I couldn't be bothered with all the faff of A&E.
Try to keep it dry and use a dressing thats easier to change thats my advice.
I'm sure a doctor/nurse will be along in a mo to shout at me for talking shite!

Steristrips ah good idea, yellow/white not good no, cleaned yes

I will try the steristrips thanks

They normally wouldn't stich now as the wound has been open too long but sounds like it needs looking at. Make an appt to see your practice nurse at your local gp surgery. They will sort it out.

Ok new development, took the plaster off so I could move my thumb around and when I flex my thumb I get a weird clicking/grinding thing in my thumb and pain down the side of my hand

I need to go see the doc now don't I

Where is your cut. Can you feel sensation in all areas of your thumb.Left, right, top and bottom. There is a chance you may have damaged a nerve or a tendon. Can you do all movements with your thumb ?

sherby · 13/06/2008 19:32

Sensations fine, can't flex my thumb in the middle it feels like I have to force it past the crack sensation which hurts right down my thumb.

Went to the GP today and she phoned plastics registrar for advice, he sent me to A+E for an xray, but when I got there and had a 3hr wait the triage nurse said it was just bruised and didn't need an xray or strapping and it was probably hurting because I had been pushing the buggy

So I have just strapped it myself

Be careful. If the plastics doc suggested xray, then that would be recommended. You may have damaged a tendon, and if you range of movement is restricted and there is no bruising it may be down to this. Can't belive you had a three hour wait. Where do you live ?

sherby · 13/06/2008 20:45

Colchester, in at 12.15 got seen at 3.20, they were very busy.

Thanks for advice, I've strapped it so its not moving and if I still can't flex by monday and this clicking sensation is still there I will go back to GP

Oh very interesting, I used to work there and as it happens know quite e few senior members of staff including the nurse manager !!. but I also know how busy and undertstaffed they are so, but you still shouldn't have waited that long.

Small world isn't it !!
