i feel so ashamed but i have a disgusting toenail that has spread to my toe.
i have been seeing a chiropodist for years now and have had a fungal infection on and off the whole time. it comes and goes.
well it has come back with a vengance. i have been a bit lax about applying the liquid i am supposed to and boy do i regret it now
one side of my toenail is yellowy brown and there is a small blister type patch on my toe, next to the nail which is filled with a kind of white pus.

sorry if too much info, but i am going on holiday on friday and would like to get it sorted before then if possible.

it started to hurt about 5 days ago so i have been putting tee tree oil in 3 times a day and it seemed to be doing the trick as it didnt hurt so much, but looked closely tonight and it has this blister thing on my toe.

what do i do??
i feel awful and sick to my stomach

I'd go to the GP
the liquid from the chiro will only treat the nail infection and if it's spread to the tissue you might need systemic antifungals (ie tablets)

however the pus makes me think it's just a normal bacterial infection as fungal infections in skin are more often flaky and sore than swollen and pussy.

lackaDAISYcal · 11/06/2008 22:29

i had a fungal infection so bad that my whole toenail came off one night and the gunk underneath it was rank to say the very least

I was prescribed tablets from the GP...terbinafine (?). Had to take them for months but it did the job and I've never had a recurrence. It sounds like yours might have gotten infected though and possibly needs anti-biotics. I would get to your GP as soon as possible and see what he says. You don't want to be going away with a possibly infected toe.

Unfortunately with nail fungus there isn't really a quick fix as it is very tenacious, but you can always cover it up with nail polish for your holiday.

lizandlulu · 11/06/2008 22:29

it is def swollen and pussy, not flaky.
i have not seen a doctor as i only noticed it tonight. i was tempted to prick it to see if any pus came out, but mum says not to.
i am going on hol early hours of friday so it will be nearly impossible to get to see our doctor tomorrow. (they work on a week in advance appointments)
i am only going till monday.

lackadaisycal, thats whay i have usually done, nailpolish! but with this being on the side of my toe, i can see it.

i may have to ring the gp tomorrow morning see if i can have an emergency appointment. though usually you have to be shouty or nasty to get one. i am neither

if it's infected pomegranite it needs antibiotics pretty quickly I would think. not an emergency in the heart attack sense, but infections tend not to get better by themselves.

Can you see the practice nurse instead? they have limited powers to prescribe things, but if they can't prescribe ABs will be able to get a script from one of the GPs for you.

exactly KM..the last thing she wants to be doing is spending her weekend trying to see a foreign doctor, especially if only away for the weekend.

tis morning, the white pus has turned yellowish. at first i thought it had gone, but on closer inspection it has just gone a different colour.

i couldnt even get through to the doctors this morning. i tried for a solid 15 minuites but it was always engaged. i had to go to town this afternoon so went to boots and asked if they had anything for nail fungal infections and they did but it was £23 and i would need 3 lots. she also advised seeing the doctor.

ha, easier said than done.

the pussy part has got alot smaller overnight, so i am just going to keep putting tee tree oil on it then see a doctor when i get back.

i dont think anything drastic will happen in 4 days.

i hope!

what about out of hours drs service ? ours is at our local hospital ,so if you ring this evening after normal gp surgery hours ,explain how painful it is ,lots of horrid yellow pus etc ,they might see you if you can get to whereever they are located ,hope that makes sense
