How long to feel better with the flu?

I’m pretty sure I picked it up on Boxing Day. On the Saturday I had a slight tickle in my throat. Sunday I was okay, just a little more tired. Monday again I felt alright, coughing but okay. By 4:30 on Monday night I was on the sofa asleep, hit a fever of 39.5 that night. On Tuesday I was just wiped out, and on Wednesday I tested positive.

Today I slept from 9pm to 11am, and thought I’d turned a corner. But by 5:30 I was on the sofa exhausted, I’ve had a bath and that’s genuinely wiped me out again. I’ve never felt this ill in my life. On Monday night I woke up every hour, sweating then shivering. My temperature was the highest that night. I’ve still got the horrendous cough and an added addition of orange gunk coming out of my sinuses, but the headache has gone. I was planning at being back to work on Monday but it’s starting to feel more doubtful, especially given a bath has wiped me out to the point I feel like I could sleep. I’ve lost a stone since the start of the week, I need something that’s going to make me feel better.

Ooh that sounds brutal, you poor thing! I don’t know how long it’ll take to fully recover but it sounds like you’ve been poorly for less than a week so be kind to yourself, you might have another week or so of feeling rough. Rest up as much as you can.

It’s been the worst week of my life. On Monday night when I woke up with my fever that high I was almost delirious. I was having such vivid dreams that blurred between dreams and reality. My cough is still awful, to the point my back and ribs hurt all the time and every time I cough I’m left really breathless. Even just sitting on the sofa I’m feeling a little short of breath.

If its any cinsolation I sit after on Boxing Day too and I’m still poorly with a bought, Diarhoa and just completely wiped. My boyfriend just went home after nursing me through 24 hours of a migraine 😭

this is honestly the worst Christmas ever

I had the diarrhoea last night and had to take Imodium because I felt like I was going to poo every time I coughed! That seems to have passed now but I’ve never felt anything like this, ever.

When I had flu last year it took me a good 3 weeks to feel back to normal energy levels. I hope you're able to rest up and recover, it can be really brutal

The diarrhoea has started for me this evening and it’s relentless 😵‍💫. Have been trying to keep hydrated but the second I drink fluids I’m rushing to the toilet again. I’m too scared to take Imodium incase I’m sick instead 🥴

I’m on week five, definitely getting better but very slowly and still so exhausted. The doctor said to give it 6-8 weeks

I’m really hoping I’ve turned a corner today. I feel slightly more with it

Urgh what??

I hope not, we have so much to do including putting Xmas away and decorating kitchen!

I felt it coming for a bit then Christmas Eve it really kicked in, vomiting was awful but the headaches were absolutely horrendous. Then the ear problems . . .

Nine days from Xmas now I think and I'd say I'm 25% better at a push. Still couldn't go out though, still dizzy, headaches, nausea, cough, ears blocked, nose bunged up. Temperature is ok - but I just want to be cold all the time. I'm not sleeping as much and I'm managing to eat once a day (although not much).

Was told three weeks 😥

GentleIron · 02/01/2026 10:39

I got sick on the 22nd and am only just starting to feel normal today.
