DS lump on foreskin aged 2 - balinitis? boil?

Hi

I'm new but really worried about DS's lump.

He's only 25 months so not really talking much but on Monday kept saying "sore willy" and was obviously suffering. We managed to see a nurse before surgery shut and she said it was balinitis and told me I haven't been washing him properly as I've never pulled up his foreskin and washed underneath. (Never entered my head I was supposed to?) Poor boy - we tried to give it a "proper wash" and put the prescribed cream on but it was MAJORLY traumatic for all of us. Went back yesterday as I wanted a Doctor's opinion and he noticed a lump, said it was a boil, gave us antibiotics. Day 3 and still not happy so went back today to see 3rd GP. He said it's not a boil or balinitis. Says DS doesn't need cream or antibiotics. Then told us we've made it worse by pulling his foreskin - which the bloody nurse (his colleague!) told us to do 2 days ago....

Anyone got any similar experiences / tips?

Poor chap really sore and dosed up on Calpol/Nurofen. Don't know what else I can do for him.

Thanks X

blimey what aload of mixed messages you are getting.

I don't know what it is but do know you shouldn't really pull the forskin back. If it must be retracted, get your son to do it as he'll stop when it hurts him.

If it's sore - what about putting on some sudocreme or similar to help soothe?

MumWith2Boys · 12/06/2008 08:14

Thanks. Sudocrem was the first thing I tried but the outside of it is fine, not even red - it's all underneath. I had never dreamt of touching his foreskin but the nurse made me feel like a useless mother with low hygiene stanards...

We're leaving it be now and just hope nature takes its course. He's woken up a bit calmer today so fingers crossed. If not we'll have to go back for Opinion Number 4...

hi, i noticed a lump on my 19 month old son's willie and the gp says it's a cyst and has referred us to hospital, perhaps for day surgery... foreskin is tight but i didn't want to hurt him so have left it. apparently they're quite common. just hope all will be ok for both boys

Fatmumslim - Does your son's cyst hurt? My lad is in pain with this. The doctor has given him antibiotics today in case it's a water infection but I'm not sure that's what it is. We'll see...

Everyone I have spoken to this week says that the nurse gave me the wrong advice about washing under the foreskin

no, my son isn't in pain. I'm sorry yours is and hope he is feeling better soon.
isn't parenting such a mixture of joy and worry?

Had to take ds to out of hours gp yesterday and he diagnosed balinitis. His willy is very swollen and very red. He gave him strong anti-b's and so far the swelling has gone down a bit but it's still very red.

I'd be really confused if I had 3 different diagnosis especially giving you 3 different ways to treat it. Would it be worth going to see a fourth person to see if they give you the same diagnosis as one of the others?

MumWith2Boys · 18/06/2008 18:55

The saga continues. Day 10 and DS in such a state today I had to take him back to the surgery again. They sent us straight up to the hospital as the GP (another different one) admitted they weren't getting anywhere.

The first doctor at the hospital diagnosed an ulcer and sent for a surgeon to take a look. She, however, diagnosed severe balinitis saying that the lump is sebum discharge. Poor boy. Anyway, like Mogs0's boy he's been given strong anti-b's and we're home now.

It has taken 10 days to get this far so I'm keeping my fingers crossed ...
