HPV Vaccine for 22 year old male?

My 15 year old son was vaccinated at school for HPV. His brother wasn’t offered it. I never thought until recently that my 22 year son might also benefit from having the vaccination. Unfortunately he’s never heard of it and needs convincing. So I’m wondering if it’s actually to late to have it or not. Should I be encouraging this?

A close friend has recently been diagnosed with oral cancer caused by HPV. I’d like my son to be protected from this. I can’t see a reason to not have the vaccine. It doesn’t seem to be offered freely by the NHS.

depends if they are sexually active or not. It’s only transmitted sexually

For your 22 year old son he needs to be having sex with males to qualify, but if qualifies he can ask his GP

If GBMSM, he is eligible until 25 and should speak to a sexual health clinic. If not, he would need to source it privately, if available that way.

Any idea why he would be more at risk by having sex with men rather than women?

Anal spreads HPV more efficiently

Because routinely girls have been vaccinated for many years.
So sex between two people of a different gender is a lower risk than two men - probably not vaccinated having sex.
