Pain in my liver - what could be causing it?

LyraSilvertongue · 05/06/2008 09:44

I've been having stabbing pains in my right side, around where my liver is, on and off for about 18 months. It's worse after I've eaten something fatty.
The GP suspected gallstones but I had a scan yesterday which didn't show any stones. So what the hell could it be?
Has anyone esle had this kind of pain? What did it turn out to be? I'm getting a bit worried...

Hi Lyra - I had this. Also checked for gallstones and had a scan they couldn't see anything. The pain continued on and off. They think it's my gallbladder playing up... apparently this happens. Is yours intermittant? Mine is. I can go for days or weeks and then it starts up again. It's common to have "episodes"...Are they doing any more tests?

I had this, but the pain was unbearable. I had gallstones, but then developed Jundice and Pancrestisis (sp?). If it was this you wouold know, as its worse than childbirth. It is possible it is gallstones, but they might have passed by the time your scan was. It sounds like gallstones, and especially with the fatty food link.
Next time you have an attack, might be best taking yourself off to hospital.
HTH

Amandella, yes it is internittent. The scanner sais he was going to have a more indepth lookm at the scan after I left (presumably he took pictures) and I'd have to speak to my GP next week.
Lisad, I thought maybe I'd passed a gallstone but the pain wasn't too bad.

The pain of gallstones is only ever really bad if they get stuck, like mine.
Gallstone pain normally starts in the front and then, goes round the side to the back, rather than a pain going though.

LyraSilvertongue · 05/06/2008 10:45

yes, I had that. It started in the front/side and spread round to my back. Last time I has it (about a week ago) it lasted an hour or so and I haven't had it since.

hope you get it sorted. I only had one attack but unfortunely it lead to some major complications, so within 3 weeks had it taken out.

MegSophandEmma · 05/06/2008 11:19

OMG is this pain righthand side, just under bottom of rib cage? I have had like a stabby achey pain there on off for over a year.

MegSophandEmma · 05/06/2008 11:21

And it goes in waves from the front to back?

Sorry Lyra for hijack. Have always wondered what this was too but have been to frightened to go to the Dr's.

lisad123 · 05/06/2008 11:22

mine started in the middle just below the rib cage, and then travelled around the side to the back HTH

MegSophandEmma · 05/06/2008 11:23

Yes thats it Lisa. I wasn't sure of organ anatomy thought it was kidneys then realised its a bit up from there.

LyraSilvertongue · 05/06/2008 11:29

Sounds like the same pain as mine Meg.
I resisted going to the docs for ages because I was scared of what they'd tell me. When they said it was prob gall stones I thought 'oh that's ok then, nothing that's going to kill me'
Now they say it's not gall stones I'm worried...
