dirorehea (sp) in a 1 year old........

my dd2 has had dirroreha the last two days not permantly but her her last two 'dirty nappies' have been very loose and has caused quite bad nappy rash, which i am treating with sudocreme.

the problem is i am not sure what is causing the dirorehrea or how to deal with it. i know from dd1 who was prone to tummy bugs that if it is a bug you are to give only water for 24 hours. but she doesnt seem 'poorly' her appetite is normal, she isnt sleeping anymore than usual, she has no temperature and seems very happy in herself.

she went off milk about a month ago but the last week or so has started taking follow on milk (she is always going on and off milk depending what mood she is in she will have it in food but not always as a drink) and has been having about 6-8 oz after each meal and as a supper drink, so could be that she has gone from hardly any milk to loads in a short space of time, if so what do i do? do i just keep giving her it and her tummy will get used to it again or do cut back untill she is better?

she also tried cherry tomatos for the first time yesterday, just before the first episode of diroreah, they were freshly bought that day from a fruit and veg shop that gets produce locally and daily so i have no doubt they were not off. and i dont think she ate that many of them, i gave her five and she didnt finish them all.

i really dont think she needs a doctor she is not poorly or dehydrated and there is nothing that docs can do for tummy bugs anyway other than monitor for dehydration if it is really bad, which it isnt it has only happened twice since yesterday afternoon. i just want to know if there is anything i could do to stop it happening again if it is from the milk or do i need to stop feeding her for 24 hours?

Could it just be teething? I think the current advice is not to stop feeding. Personally I would carry on as normal, it doesn't sound too acute, just keep an eye and maybe go for fairly bland food (egg is good for re-establishing "firmness" if just a teething type thing).

If the nappy rash is bad I swear by Metanium rather than sudocrem.

right i will get some of that. she usually gets red cheeks when she is teething so i dont think it is that but it could be as she has recently got quite a few teeth all at once.

was going to be giving tuna and spring onion sandwhices for lunch but will do boiled egg sandwhices instead. i did give her wholegrain porridge for her supper last night to 'firm' things up but that obv didnt work.

will she still be okay with the milk do you think or should i give her water intsead? she eats well so she doesnt really need the milk as for as calories/calcium are concerned she just likes it atm.

Since it's not acute I wouldn't worry about with-holding milk. If it got more acute I would ask advice from Doc or NHS direct - my gp has at times recommended stopping milk but that was for VERY acute poo issues! (No I can't spell Diaer-whotsit!)

lol me niether. ill just keep an eye on her then and see how she goes. no it isnt very accute. dd1 has had very accute poo issues too. we thought she might have to be hospitalised at one point so i know where your coming from on that one.
