Dh stressed about his blood pressure - any tips?

Dh went to the docs yesterday about something unrelated, (allergy) and the GP obviously seized the opportunity to do his blood pressure, which he said was borderline high (162/98). Dh thought this was probably because he was stressed about being at the GP, so the GP asked him to take it regularly over the next 2 weeks then take the results back. Yesterday he had one in the afternoon that was 168/103 or so, then another which was 138/87. This morning was 126/62. So - firstly, does this sound like it was stress? And secondly, if he does have highish blood pressure, what is the best way of bringing it down? He's not overweight, does lots of exercise, but likes cakes!

could well be just the stress of knowing his BP was high or waiting at the drs surgery to get it done surrounded by other people's screaming kids and running 40 minutes late.
can he ask for a 24 hour monitor?
it would just pump up randomly over 24 hrs giving more of a true reading.

I think it is probably 'high normal' and at the GP he was just a bit stressed! But he's at that age where he ought to think about it in any case, so I'd like to find some ways of lowering or maintaining a lower blood pressure.
