I've been referred for a surgical extraction, tooth infected, antibiotics prescribed and day 2 taken but the pain which was a 1/2 when I saw the dentist on Wednesday is now off the scale. 111 told me to do what I'm already doing (salt rinse, frozen peas) ibuprofen and paracetamol isnt touching the pain now so chemist first thing. I would have hoped the antibiotics may have started to ease things by 48hrs but it's horrendous. No sleep, no food. There's no swelling though I feel grim. Wouldn't wish this on anyone. My dentist won't pull it as risk of it breaking. I'm literally rocking with the pain

The reason there’s no swelling is because there’s nowhere for the infection to drain. Ideally the pressure needs to be to be released. This can involve making a hole through to the inner part, it doesn’t have to involve extraction as a temporary emergency measure

Phone your dentist again.

See if your dentist can extirpate the pulpal contents in the meantime OP.

Been to dentist. They offered to try take it out and that's it. Numbing shots didn't work.

I would try and get the abscess to drain by holding hot salted water in your mouth rather than using cold water.

A different dentist for a second opinion? Hospital for decent pain relief until the antibiotics start working?

Mattjack2 · 27/09/2025 12:04

Ended up in hospital last night. IV morphine didn't help. Stronger antibiotics added which helped. Still a waiting game for the referral though

I’m glad that you were able to get better antibiotics. Hopefully the swelling will reduce and ease the pain. Sounds awful though. Dental pain sucks.

If you’ve got money to throw at it, I used a dentist in the NW who has an oral surgeon
my dentist said I needed sedation, it was too close to the nerve, he wasn’t touching it etc
she whipped it out in 5 mins (lower wisdom tooth) and if I ever need another, I’m going back there despite being terrified!

Swirl your mouth with whisky its the best pain reliever ever. You don't have to swallow it.

Antibiotics are not a treatment for dental pain, if there's no swelling there's no abscess. Most dental pain is inflammation of the pulp, not kòinfection and therefore antibiotics don't treat the problem. Even with an abscess antibiotics won't cure the pain without treatment (drainage)

Your dentist needs to extirpate the pulp to get you out of pain if they aren't able to extract the tooth. This will settle the nerve and also drain any infection if there is any. You need to go back to your dentist and get them to actually treat your problem, can you find an emergency dentist open on the weekend?
