PMT turns me into the Mummy/wife from hell - a week of terminal meltdown and more stressed than usual - poor little dds don't know what's going on and why Mummy keeps shouting and crying~!!! Anyone got any suggestions or magic tips and/or potions to help? Have been taking OEP for several months and it doesn't seem to be helping!

How are your periods themselves? Painful or heavy?

I used to get terrible PMT and I cut out sugar from my diet and ate every three hours (crackers mostly) and found it just vanished. This was on the advice of my gynae.

But if it's because you know you are going to go through pain or heavy bleeding, that's treatable too.

It's really hard isn't it, with kids around, you try and be reasonable even when you feel like crap. You probably find that you can't concentrate either because your blood sugar is all haywire (another reason to eat very regularly but avoid high sugar foods).

Also, are you having a high enough OEP tablet? I think I was on 1500mg before it even started having an effect. I also took brewers yeast and that helped.

I had awful PMT for up to 2wks beofre (for years). I Cut out caffiene and it near enough cleared up. Try taking magnesium too as low levels are linked to PMT. Try anything you can as some things work for some and some for others iyswim. I know how awful it is and you (and your fmaily!) have my sympathy.

Hiya, I was the same if not worse.
I've started taking 5-HTP and it seems to be working a treat. I take one 100mg tablet at night (they make me nauseous).
I've also tried Agnus Cactus (in the tincture, not the tablet) and thay also works like magic!

Do try one of them as they are both great at sorting out PMT. If you don't like taking tablets etc then you could also try Reflexology which fantastic for anything!!

Sorry-reading this back it looks a bit "do this now!" but I don't have much time

snotbuster · 02/06/2008 10:53

What is 5-HTP? is it herbal or do you get it on prescription?

parachutes · 02/06/2008 10:56

sorry-was meant to list some links re 5-HTP but Mac crashed crashed. Google 5-HTP and there's a wealth of info out there.
You can buy them in Holland & Barrett but I bought mine online from here as they were a higher dosage.

a second vote for agnus castus...its fantastic (although doesnt work for everyone). Usually takes 3 months before it starts to work, I found it helped with 1 month.
Its also great for fluid/bloated tummy during pmt season too!

parachutes · 03/06/2008 10:35

You're right PinkPurple it doesn't work for everyone does it-strange isn't it?
The other thing about 5-HTP was that I had only been taking it for a week before I had my period and I was fine...amazing!

the only thing that worked for me was Starflower oil in 1000mg a day dose and I am a new woman now - they are affectionally known as my 'anti-witch' pills in the wisty household. I now get zero pmt

Oliveoil · 03/06/2008 22:01

how long did they take to work Wisteria?

I find mine is getting worse and I am snappy and foul to anyone within a metre radius

LittleMyDancing · 03/06/2008 22:05

Starflower oil works for me too, but I have to remember to take them EVERY day, otherwise it's back to witch status.

Hormones all over the shop lately and it's the only thing that keeps me vaguely sane.

Wisteria · 04/06/2008 18:40

I think they worked moreorless instantly to be honest, I certainly have never had a banshee moment since and seem to be remarkably calm 100% of the time now - I do miss the odd day as I have no brain and it doesn't seem to affect me too adversely
