Anyone experienced an usual sickness bug in their little ones?

My son (4) has been off school for almost 2 weeks now due to a bug, trouble is it seems very unusual. Instead of the usual sickness for a day or two and gradually getting better, he has been consistently vomiting once or twice and is okay for a day or two then it returns. This has since turned to diarreah the last few days but no other signs of illness he is completely fine (no fever, eating and still full of energy). As soon as we think he is better and can return to school he will be sick and then the 48hour waiting period begins again. He has been to a GP who is sure its just a bug but ive never experienced this before.

My nephew had a similar thing and it turned out to be something contracted from animals after a visit to the farm - needed antibiotics to clear
