Suspected kidney stone, A&E messed up scan referral

Hoping someone can help!

I ended up in A&E at the weekend in severe pain. Saw a doctor who said he was 99% sure it's a kidney stone due to location of the pain, blood in urine etc. He said I'd need a scan to confirm if it needs any further intervention, so they sent me home with strong painkillers and said I'd get a phone call today with a scan date.

I didn't get a phone call so I called the hospital and it turns out he hasn't completed the referral correctly. So I haven't been referred for a scan. They said I need to go back to A&E and start all over again.

I really don't want to do this because
A. It's not life threatening so now they know what it is I don't think it is A&E worthy
B. I'm in far too much pain to sit in A&E for 14 hours
C. The stone could pass by itself in the next couple of days anyway

I really don't know what to do. Does anyone know is it worth trying to go through my GP to get a scan? The lady on the phone at the hospital was quite insistent A&E is my only option though.

Your only route to a very near term scan will be through A&E.

You may find that triage are able to route you through a much swifter path as it’s basically a repeat.

A&E is often fairly quiet very early in the morning.

Thanks, I hope your dad is OK!

I know I really should get the scan. But I could be in that waiting room for days, and I really am in so much pain. At the weekend there was a man sleeping on a chair in the waiting room who had been there for 72 hours.

My daughter went to GP with gallstone pain and had a scan within 7 days. Give them a ring maybe they can send you for an urgent one? Alternatively, a private ultrasound near me is only £59 so that might be another option.

Go early in the morning, the wait times are a lot shorter. You can monitor online

Why not phone ED and explain what’s happened? If it’s just that the request wasn’t filled in fully then the consultant should be able to sort it and provide feedback to the person you saw.

My dad was admitted for emergency surgery after the toxins starting backing up. He was in so much pain and fobbed off with tablets. He was going into liver Failure. He's fine now after the surgery and a stay in hospital.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll go tomorrow morning then.

@GeneralSettings I'm really sorry to hear about your dad x
