Long story short(ish). Horrendous periods. Tried just about every contraceptive pill there is to no avail. Had ultrasound and ruled out Endrometriosis [sp?]. Been put on the depo injection by GP. I had my first one 27th March and had no bleeds (great) But this morning wake up to a nice load of bleeding. Not what one would call spotting but prob what the first/second day of a normal period would be like. Explains why I've been so low for the past 3 days and why I was almost in tears at work last night.
Is this common for week 10 of the depo? Or is it not going to work for me? Or am I going to go through another round of give it a few months (I know I sound impatient, but I've given so many things a few months now) Drama Alert If this one doesn't work I don't know what to do. I really can't take much more of this .

It def took more than one injection for my periods to stop altogether, it just made me fat!

mistypeaks · 30/05/2008 10:10

Although I think I may be able to handle a bit of weight gain, rather than tears, tiredness, dizzyness, headaches, pain . . .
So looking like give it a few months option then.

Anyone else got any thoughts?

I spotted constantly for 6 months on the depo and put on a ton of weight so it wasnt good for me at all. I use cerazette mini-pill now and havent had a period for about 10 months which is great

I had similar, feeling low and period but after two three months I never had another period until I came of the jabs about 18 months later.

I did though find for the first 4-5 months I would have very low feelings for 3-4 days around when I should have had my period. But this passed and I just had nothing - no period no low feeling.

I have been stz so no need to have jab now and periods after stz are only light and three days long.

Some women do bleed from week 10 or so, as the next injection becomes due. Most women stop bleeding completely by the second injection.

What you can do is go and see the practice nurse/GP, if the bleeding is heavy they can give you norethisterone to stop the bleeding or you can have the next injection early. We give it to some women at 10-11 weeks instead of 12 as they bleed early.

I note your comment about horrendous periods. Are they really painful and or heavy?.

The actual cause of all this needs to be established rather than just treat the symptoms with depo (which may not work longer term).

Were you aware that ultrasound scans will not actually detect endometriosis deposits?. They are far too small to be detected on an ultrasound scan. Endometriosis is usually diagnosed only through a keyhole surgery operation called a laparoscopy.

GP should refer you to a gynae as a matter of course rather than just putting you on Depo (which is also not a good thing to take if you have not completed your family). Also such problems are often outside a GPs remit, you ought to see a gynae as a matter of course.

Attila - They are painful and heavy. Every 2 (or if I'm lucky) 3 weeks. I get so tired (but I am not anaemic) I have a naturally low blood pressure anyway, but not surprisingly I get very lightheaded with them. I also get horrible headaches with my period which I assume is bp related. My PMT (which I never suffered from pre-babies) is getting silly. I get close to depressed with it.
GPs have been a little lax I know. Just pill after pill tried. Mefenamic acid which was just crap.
I don't think I have endo as I conceived both children within hours of deciding we were going to 'try' .
Oh and btw our family is 100% complete (I can't cope with the ones I've got let alone any more )

I had licht period for the first 6 months after starting the jab, doctor gave me tablets to stop it and it hasnt been back for 3yrs now x

lottiesmummy · 31/05/2008 14:03

light* sorry

CarGirl · 31/05/2008 14:05

Is it worth you asking for that treatment on your womb - they zap it with something, you can only have it done if your family is complete but it's supposed to significantly reduce the bleeding. Have you tried the mirena coil?
