DD may have chicken pox and is on holiday!

My DD (5) is on holiday (Menorca) with her daddy and has not been feeling well since they got there on Sunday. She has been off her food, very tired, not sleeping well at night and had a slight temp. He has been giving her liquid paracetamol (saw a local pharmacist) and trying to keep her cool - luckily not that hot there at the mo. This morning he has rung me and she has a rash on her face and down between her collar bones. Am so worried this may be chicken pox. She is seeing the doctor at 10.00. She has not had CP and I am so worried that this is what it is. They are due home on Sunday but from what I've read they won't be able to fly for quite some time. Any comments on 'not letting the airline know and just coming home anyway'?

Yes she'll be stuck for a while if it's chickenpox.

It's unfair to bring her back whilst she's infectious. Everyone on the plane will be exposed; it's not good in early preganancy (or late but hopefully no 36+ pg women flying).

I expect she was infectious when she travelled out on Sunday and we didn't know about it then.

A rash on the face doesn't sound like CP to me. Could it be slapped cheek?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 29/05/2008 08:46

She probably was.

I had CP as a pg adult. Twas grim and I wouldn't knowingly inflict it on another adult.

Tbh it sounds like it isn't CP - that tends to start with one spot (not rash) then further spots develop from that one.

Ds1 had a virus recently that sounded like this - grizzly for a couple of days, high temp, runny eyes, cough etc. THen came out with rash on his face, which spread down his neck and eventually covered him. Doc said it 'looked' like measles, but as he had had the vaccination it couldn't be - so it was either a very mild dose of measles (and I mean VERY mild, he was better in a couple of days), or a similar sort of virus which is probably more likely. But he did recover pretty quickly.

Hope your dd is better soon.

Doesn't sound like CP to me tbh - the spots are more random , not clustered or rashy. Could simply be viral or even a heat rash. If it is CP she shouldn't fly back until not contagious, as certified by the dr, and the airline will stop them if caught. It is selfish to deliberately risk exposing those who may be susceptible or have suppressed immune systems. Insurance should over any extend stay and probably only a day or two's delay.

Thank you everyone. They are waiting for the doctor in the hotel now.

what was the outcome ?

Toffeetart · 30/05/2008 00:13

Gp looked at her and said it wasn't CP but did not know what was wrong with her. Took her to hopspital where she was examined and a blood sample taken for analysis. They have told them that she has a virus that they have not seen before! Advised to carry on with liquid paracetamol (even though she doesn't have a temp anymore!?) and go back to the hospital if she does not improve. She also has to go back to hospital on Sat. to see if she is 'Fit to Fly' on Sunday. As of tonight the rash is getting worse ...... Looks like Cornwall for her hols next year.
