How bad is it that I've just coughed up a load of blood?

Doctor.

You have prob burst a tiny blood vessel in the back of your throat - and it's leaking. It's like grazing your knee - except it's your throat.

A little bit of blood goes a long way - esp when mixed in gunk.

However if you can't breathe and are in severe distress cos of the asthma go to A&E!

2sugars · 27/05/2008 07:48

Go to dr, he/she will direct you to the Medical Assessment Unit, so you won't have to wait at A&E. Do it NOW. If you phone up the out-of-hours GP you'll probably have quite a trek - at least we do - so leave it till 8.30 and ask the duty doctor to call you back ASAP.

what colour is usually pertinent and pain. A clot is bad a few streaks of fresh blood in mucous is usually a burst blood vessell. Dark blood needs checking. As does anything that involves back or chest pain.
am veteran of pleurisy pneumonia and asthma... Doc always advised to check out any blood though on coughing.
get well soon sounds very grim yg

Dark blood sounds worse to me than light blood. Can you breathe ok? Can you see your regular doctor today?

belgo · 27/05/2008 08:24

That sounds very nasty Yorkiegirl. Hope you get seen by a good doctor soon.

Cappuccino · 27/05/2008 08:24

If it was from her throat, it would be bright red and fresh, surely? Not dark brown, not thick and gluey.

Do you feel ok? Are you eating and drinking? Can you go up a flight of stairs without needing a break?

Buda · 27/05/2008 08:39

Sounds like something to see doc about anyway - so glad you have a appt. Let us know how you get on.

belgo · 27/05/2008 08:40

If it was from her throat, it may already have gone into her stomach, mixed with the stuff in her stomach.

But only a doctor can say where it's coming from. Glad you have an appointment for today Yourkiegirl!

Antibiotics? Surprised if not, with bloody sputum and green phlegm. And the blood will most likely be down to inflammation of your bronchi due to infection, so at least the steroids will get right on top of the inflammtion. Do you have a temp? Hope you start to pick up very soon. If peak flow drops lower then a+e. xxx
