DH has had discoloured semen with red/brown lumps in it for about a week. It looks like seeds about 3-4mm long in transparent brownish jelly. He has been to GUM clinic and they haven't found anything wrong yet. He is going back next week.

It might be a bleed from his prostate. Does anyone know the implications of that? If its not his prostate then what might it be? We are TTC (for over a year) so I'm worried that there may be a fertility issue.

You both must be very worried. Hopefully someone can come along and reassure you.

expatinscotland · 25/05/2008 18:55

My dad had this, but he was much older than your DH.

In his case, it was indeed his prostate. He had cancer, which had enlarged his prostate.

He needs to be seen by a urologist to find out what's causing it.

It could be lots of things, but right now, his health needs to be no. 1.

hairycaterpillar · 25/05/2008 19:05

In young men blood (if that is what it is) can happen and is not that unusual. If no other symptoms probably is nothing to worry about. Can be caused by LOTS of things other than cancer eg infection or inflammation. If persists or other urinary symptoms then should be checked out Presumably he's been to his GP?

missausten · 25/05/2008 19:15

We are concerned about cancer but dh is only 29 so its not likely. They felt around for testicular cancer at clinic but it wasn't a very sophisticated test. No one has looked at his prostate yet, maybe have to go to GP for that.

He hasn't been to the GP yet. He thought it was best to go to GUM clinic as they might have more experience that the GP. We will just have to wait and see what clinic says next week. He is v worried.

He hasn't had a knock in that general area at all has he? that might explain a bit of a bleed somewhere up in the system.

whomovedmychocolate · 25/05/2008 20:11

A GUM clinic would be the first port of call, yes. At his age it is unlikely to be prostate cancer - it takes about a decade to get to the stage where bleeding would be apparent so it's very unlikely. Much more likely, as others have said is inflammation in the area which can be caused by a multitude of reasons.

But rest assured, most problems in this area and both temporary and completely treatable without him dying or losing his fertility

expatinscotland · 25/05/2008 20:13

He should probably see a urologist to try to figure out exactly what's causing it, especailly as it's not an STI - seeing as the GUM clinic has checked him for all that.

If the GUM clinic can refer him, great, but if not, he'll need to see his GP and get referred to a consultant to see if he can't figure it out.

Needs to see his GP and possibly be referred to a urologist.

Prostate cancer is very unlikely given his age, it is far more likely that he has prostatitis (infection of the prostate gland) which is very common in younger men and often improves with time and sometimes antibiotics.

Does have have any swelling or pain in his testicles or pain or difficulty weeing?

cmotdibbler · 25/05/2008 21:40

Sounds most like prostatitis - which won't have any effect on fertility. But he needs to see his GP and prob get a referal to have it looked into.

expatinscotland · 25/05/2008 21:41

the poor soul may have to have his prostate examined . . .

madamez · 25/05/2008 21:42

Yes he needs to see his doctor to rule out anything nasty. You don't actually have to answer this online, but if you are TTC have you been shagging a lot? Or has he been having to wank into a jar or anything? Because sometimes, excessive spunking can cause a bit of bleeding (or so I have heard).

emma1977 · 25/05/2008 21:45

If he goes to see his GP, make sure he choses one with long, skinny fingers!

expatinscotland · 25/05/2008 21:48

@ emma.

as my dad says when men his age (early 70s) ask him about getting their prostates checked, 'don't die of embarrassment.'

missausten · 25/05/2008 23:07

Thanks for all your replies. I will send him for prostate exam if GUM clinic can't help next week. We are not TTC in a manic way like in the movies, probably only have sex 4-5 times a week. I suspect that we aren't very fertile to start with. We've been married almost 8 years, never used contraception and only have 2 dcs.

expatinscotland · 25/05/2008 23:10

why not give the GUM clinic a ring and ask them what they think and if they suggest he see his GP ring adn get an appointment?

his GP may be able to suss it out pronto, especially if he gets one like that Dr. Jessen chap on Embarrassing Illnesses.

if not, he/she can refer him to urologist for assessment.

Spockster · 25/05/2008 23:23

4-5 times a WEEK, with 2 kids???

Jeeeez.....massive respect...

missausten · 26/05/2008 08:32

@missausten this was a very long time ago. Did you find out what caused this? Experiencing similar with DH. Really none the wiser. Thanks in advance
