friend has this coming from their scalp, it is slowly growing and hair is growing around it. GP said today it is probably fine and to go private if my friends concerned. Doctor also used the word melanoma but said non cancerous.
I have no experience here but my friend is still worried and it causes pain if caught. Do these pictures look suspicious to anyone here?
Pics should have sensitive thing on hopefully

It's impossible to assess from a photo on the internet. Your friend did the right thing getting it checked with a GP. They should follow the medical advice given by the professional who assessed it in person. If they have concerns that the GP missed something, they should have it double checked with a second opinion from a private dermatologist. All the best.

Oh of course he is going to. It seems odd to be told to go private if there’s nothing wrong or just live with pain 🤷🏻‍♀️

Can't make out the pictures
Maybe pilar cyst (a cyst found on the scalp)

The GP won't have the funding to remove it for non-malignant reasons, which is why they've advised a private appointment. Unfortunately it catching on your friend's hairbrush/comb falls into that category, so if it is bothering him, he will need to see someone privately. NHS GP's used to have funding to do minor ops to remove little non-suspicious lumps and bumps but I think that's largely gone with the wind.

I wondered cyst as well. I feel guilty because he’s mentioned it in passing but I only actually looked last night and it’s rather large so I was caught off guard.
Obviously it’s concerning to have something suddenly growing so took a punt here.
Hes going for a second opinion.
