PCOS and acne - how long should the Pill take to clear skin up, if at all?

DD has being given Yasmin to deal with dreadful acne caused by PCOS. Consultant said should take 2-3 weeks to see results. It will be 3 weeks on Tuesday and though there has been some improvement, it is still really bad.

We thought at the time he meant she would have a glowing, clear skin by this time, but now think he meant it would start to heal by 2-3 weeks. Now wondering if we are being unrealistic in our expectations. Does anyone have any experience of going onto Yasmin with dreadful skin? How long until it worked for you?

DD is despairing as she now thinks nothing will work. She is only 16, poor child, and her acne rules her life. I was hoping this was the magic cure that would have her emerge like a butterfly from a chrysalis...

Your poor DD .

I have PCOS and have in the past used Dianette to clear up acne if it gets really bad. It normally takes 3 months to clear properly. Taking the pill seems to be a very individual thing, so perhaps if Yasmin doesn't suit, your DD could swap to another pill.

My skin isn't 100% perfect now - a bit greasy, a few spots and blackheads here and there. But it really isn't that noticeable.

I'm sure your DD will be looking great in no time.

I would say more like 2-3 packets than 2-3 weeks.

I started Dianette for bad skin and it took a good couple of months before I noticed an improvement.

Any treatment for acne should be given 3 months minimum to assess how well it is working.

Don't despair yet!

Is she using any topical treatments too?

I took Dianette for a few months after developing painful, bleeding acne on my chest, shoulders and back after giving birth to DD1.

It worked really fast for me.

dianette is the way to go.....

DD is on Dianette, she says it took about a year to clear up completely, though it got better gradually from about 2 months.

Thank you all so much for replying. Lots of useful information here, and thanks for the sympathy too, Perkin - she really needs it. (No one else in her year at school has more than one or two spots, so she feels really isolated).

And yes, she has zineryt to put on, which helps, but hardly stems the tide of new ones.
