she has hurt her arm......happened last thursday in acro. she did a forward dive roll over someone and landed badly on her wrist/hand and they thought she had dislocated or fractured something (the dance teacher and a another mum who is a first aider).

anyhoo....they ring and DH was actually waiting outside to collect DD2 ready for scouts, so brought all three girls home and I take DD1 to A&E.......xrays ect....

anyhoo.....doc comes in, queries scafoid (sp?) fracture, but then tells us that he thinks we have bought her in too soon and so the fracture hasn't shown up (something to do with bones bleeding etc??, does that sound correct??).......he still thinks fracture, but as they have had issues and arguements recently with a nearby hospital (the one we would go to with fractures for clinic apps etc) he will for now just bandage it and see us in a week and then xray again to look for 'calcification' that would then prove the break....

((adding here that the problems with the other hosptial is all true......got two friends currently going thro complaints with both hospital for incorrect fracture DX, or even misses-at the hospital, not my friends))

anyway.....flame gave us a teeny wrist support for her, plus I have got some tube-a-grip stuff too, yet she is still in utter agony.....plus she has now had almost costant pins and needles in her hand too...

one friend reckons that the hospital will just shrug at me and say to take her home agian until friday.....

another reckons to leave her till tuesday

I want to take her back but am scared that will then get irritated, plus DH is at work all this weekend and it means taking all 5 kiddies in..........that IS insane in my book.

I don;t like leaving her.......I am worried that it will cause issues if it is fractured and left, yet.......will it???

oh, and the hospital also queried me why we have taken her in already 13 times in the last 12mths, and looked at us (and I wonder if this is why they are kind of 'fobbing us off') strangely about being there 'yet again' in their words.

problem is.....she hasn;t........but if you add us ALL up, we have, what with us all being injured in the car accident last october, and DS2 swollowing a glass pebble a few weeks abo etc.

now....are they lumping us all together and making DD1 bear the brunt of their 'issues', or am I reading too much into it.......

arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

sorry, more issues here than needed

do I take her in this morning or wait??? either way......got to go with all five as DH is going to be at work constantly except evening, and bank hol evenings will bring in all the drunks so that will mean direct avoidence!!!!

tbh I don't think it is unusual to have to review fractures over a period of time but the pins and needles would concern me enough to seek another assessment asap.

posieparker · 25/05/2008 10:51

take her, take her, take her.

TaIcy · 25/05/2008 10:51

I would take her psycho, regardless of all the other issues.

I would forget about all that, and take her.

Yep.

MrsWeasley · 25/05/2008 10:54

Is there anyone else who you could ring like a walk in centre or a nice GP and ask for advice?

Tiggiwinkle · 25/05/2008 10:56

Take her to be seen again, without a doubt-she is in severe pain plus the pins and needles needs to be taken into account. Good luck-hope you don't have to wait too long!

Psychomum5 · 25/05/2008 10:56

not sure actually re-gp's advice, and this hosptail is a 5mins drive, 15mins walk, so nothing closer for walk-in either!!!

argh.....

thankyou....you have all told me what I reckon is right anyway, am just needing self justification really!

thankgoodness that DS1 had a very decent b/day pressie in a PSP yesterday.......and we also have a DS that DS2 can use.

occupying the boys is a major chore at times like these

ho hum.....will go and get sorted then

OP posts:
charliecat · 25/05/2008 11:06

Take her back. I had similar and they fobbed my mum off, but they had set my broken wrist in a cast without putting the bone back in the right place
Had to be knocked out for them to break it, and redo it.
Take her back.

Psychomum5 · 25/05/2008 11:10

argh @ re-breaking.

right......I am off to get ready.....

OP posts:
Psychomum5 · 25/05/2008 14:09

thankyou all.....

rang DH, he came and had the kiddies, and took her.

they said it would be about 3hrs, but because we had been already last thursday we got 'fast tracked'....

seen and plastered and home in less than 2hrs!!!!.

and no shrugging at me for being 'nuerotic' either!

one lovely thing......the detpartment 'drunk' was happily collapses in the entrance.....he 'exposed' himself by pissing all over the doors......oh you should have heard the reaction of the ladies there.......not nice to see I agree but the shock......lol! I mean....I am as horrified but surely it is not the fault of the A&E staff that they cannot move this man,.....even the police couldn;t do anything, they had moved him 4 times already in the last 12hr apparently, and he still comes back!

hey ho....all casted and feeling much better now

OP posts:
MrsWeasley · 25/05/2008 16:11

glad you got it sorted out at last. I am they didnt do it before.

TaIcy · 25/05/2008 16:33

glad it's all sorted..hoping your dd feels better soon.

jybay · 25/05/2008 19:58

"glad you got it sorted out at last. I am they didnt do it before. "

It is quite normal not to plaster suspected scaphoid fractures, just to splint, so the hospital didn't do the wrong thing. In your daughter's case, though, it was obviously sensible to put one on for more support once it became obvious she was in a lot of pain.

Flamesparro · 25/05/2008 20:22

Hurrah!

Finally plastered.

Did you get my text yesterday?

posieparker · 26/05/2008 06:50

No nuerosis!!! Great outcome.

Weegiemum · 26/05/2008 07:11

When I broke my scaphoid (fabulous way to get out of changing dirty nappies) I was sent home for a week too, because the fracture is hairline and doesnt show up to start with. But it is horrible! I broke mine falling up the stairs at the age of 30

If there were any "issues" it shouldn't stop them treating your dd. What they get irritated about is people who use the A&E as a substitute for GP, but a broken wrist is a real accident or emergency.

Psychomum5 · 26/05/2008 08:34

well......the cast is working

she has wokent this morning, she has slept and woken this morning, and says that her arm is still sore, but there is no pins and needles and it does feel better.

OP posts:
SlightlyMadSweet · 26/05/2008 08:39

so have they re-XRayed? Or just plastered?

Squirdle · 26/05/2008 08:42

Ooh just seen this. Poor M! Glad it's all sorted now though...plastered at 14 eh

Psychomum5 · 26/05/2008 08:53

squirdle......!!! ((you free this week per-chance??)

nope to the re-x,ray. they said it takes 10-14days for a scaphoid fracture to show up sometimes, all to do with the re-calcification of the bones etc...all that is would show right now is swelling.

doc is convinced tho, and he said that they have to try three things first before plastering if they cannot see the break streight off.....bandaging, splinting then casting.

he bandaged, I decided it wasn;t helpful so with flame's wrist support we kind of then splinted, and as we had before we went back and told them this when we got there, telling them that even with the support she was in agony, he said we could therefore go straight into a cast!!

all madness really........both sodding hospitals are haing issues regarding DXing fractures etc, and the amount of people now that they refer for MRI scans because og it all........beyond belief really and think of the cost.

you would think that a decent xray person and common sense would work quite well really......not so here!

hey ho.....M is indeed 'plastered' at 14!!!

ooooh....another plus, a HUGE PLUS.....tis her left hand, and they have plastered up around her thumb.....she can;t suck her thumb anymore

OP posts:
Flamesparro · 26/05/2008 10:45

It was that cast that stopped me biting my nails

Psychomum5 · 26/05/2008 10:47
