to correct his teeth that are very crooked. New teeth trying to come through and there isn't the room. He also has a cross bite. He is 6.5 years old. He requires a plate and night-time headgear.

Anyone got any experience of this? I had braces when I was a child but I can't remember how old I was when the treatment started.

Just wonder if this is abit soon?

DS1 (14) has a brace for overbite. He was advised that he could not start treatment until all his baby teeth had fallen out which they did about 14 months ago (well the last one anyway!). It might be different for your ds as his teeth are crooked as well and his adult teeth aren't able to come through properly.

It's unusual for such a young child I think to have orthodontic treatment. My dc had to wait until their grown up teeth came through.
The head gear was difficult for my dd to get used to but she was 13 and really wanted nice teeth so she put up with it.
I'd say getting your ds to commit to the treatment will be difficult at such a young age, but important in my view.

Have soft food in the press for the first few days after the brace is fitted. My dd only wanted stuff like tinned spaghetti and soup, as chewing was difficult.

Thanks for the quick replies. He's got 4 new teeth through but the rest are still milk teeth. I don't want to put him through un-necessary trauma but obviously want the best for him. Tricky one!

Maybe try to get a second opinion. Perhaps your ds's teeth have too many problems to wait until he's a bit older? Our ds (now 8) needs orthodontic treatment but we've decided to wait until he's a bit older (when all his baby teeth have fallen out). I also had treatment when I was a teenager then again when I was nearly 30 because my teeth keep moving - quite a pain having to have treatment twice, especially as an adult!
