DS1 is being referred for SALT. What should I expect?

DS1 is 3.5 and what seemed just a lazy way of talking has developed into a noticeable lisp and he doesn't pronounce most consonants properly. I mentioned it at his 3 year check and HV phoned today to say she has referred him to the Speech Therapists and that we will be hearing from them.
We are being quite matter of fact about it and not stressed at all. But I'm just wondering what to expect. DO we have session or course of sessions with therapist, speech excercises to do at home, do I get coached in how to encourage him to work harder at his pronounciation etc. How long and how much hard work does it take to see improvements? Not afraid of time and hard work but I like to be prepared
Any advice from other mums who've been there is much appreciated.
I have to collapse into bed now but if anyone else wants to post words of wisdom this late at night please feel free!
