Had a last minute appointment with the doctor today to discuss some test results. I've got a positive FIT test and have been referred to the 2 week pathway for a colonoscopy the doctor just kept talking about cancer and seemed flustered when she was speaking to me. Does anyone have experience of this. I have external piles but haven't had a flare up in years. Will this contribute to the positive test?

Plenty of time to have a wash! You’ll be done pooing by 9am for sure (probably 8am in fact)

Lillabetty · 16/05/2025 21:54

Update!. Dose 1 done taste wasn't bad to begin with towards the end did make me gag. I was 10 mins in and already pooing! My bum hole is stinging already though 😅. Where i haven't eaten hardly anything since Wednesday evening I think this is going to be a quick cleanse

Vaseline will help massively with the stinging!
And be prepared that even though you will feel you’ve been emptied tonight there’ll be more tomorrow!

Yellow sounds right. Good luck with the procedure.

Chewbecca · 17/05/2025 08:56

Well done, 🤞 the worst is over now.
Vaseline for the bum hole from the off, if you ever do it again.

itsmeafterall · 17/05/2025 09:30

Morning. Colonoscopy veteran here.

Get some sudocrem. It's brilliant and will calm your bum hole down a lot. Wash and dry before putting g it on. Wipes actually make it more sore unless you fully dry afterwards. Dab rather than wipe.

Yellow poo is normal at this stage, as are explosive noisy poos. Delightful 😬

You Might find that now you are 'empty' that you just have feeling of needing to poo but nothing is actually there.

I usually wear a sanitary towel or panty liner for added security.

Headaches and nausea all fully normal. I have taken paracetomol in the past and it been fine.

I also recommend the sedation for the procedure - or gas and air (entonox) St least.

Good luck !

Words · 17/05/2025 12:22

Another vote for sudocrem. Mine is taking a while to calm down ( a week ago since procedure now) but sudocrem really eases the stinging and itching, which is worse at night, oddly.

Good advice re drying and dabbing @itsmeafterall .

Lillabetty · 17/05/2025 17:12

All done ladies. I survived my first ever colonoscopy. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be it wasn't painful at all. My sedation didn't work, so I watched the whole thing. No polyps i had two biopsies done on areas that looked inflamed, and I have bubbly deposits, which the doctor said it's more than likely IBS. I was praised for my prep and was told I'm clean as a whistle. They said my piles don't look like an issue but if they bother me the GP can help sort them out. Thankyou for all your advice and support it means alot

I’m glad it went well for you op!

colonoscopyfears · 18/05/2025 13:19

Thanks for coming back and updating OP. Glad it went well for you. Was it painful afterwards at all? Have you had any cramping after the fact? The NHS page said to expect cramping and bleeding afterwards, and I'm an absolute wuss when it comes to stomach cramps! 😳

Edited

I didn't experience any cramping or bleeding after mine.

Well done OP. Glad it went ok.

@colonoscopyfears. I too am an absolute wuss. The only slight pain I felt was from the gas they use to inflate things to get a good look. That passed very quickly and they encourage you to keep farting to get rid of it. No bleeding at all and they took a lot of tissue for biopsies. Bum still a bit sore and itchy but sudocrem really helps.

Lillabetty · 18/05/2025 16:22

@colonoscopyfears nope no cramping or bleeding my butt and tummy feel absolutely fine i do however still feel wobbly on my legs but the hospital said that's normal for 24-48hrs after sedation. I had the most amazing sleep last night! I slept from 7:30pm-11am this morning. I've no appetite as of yet I'm sure that'll come back in time. Also no bowel movements as of yet either

I had a fabulous sleep after too, and a while for appetite to return along with bowel movements.

colonoscopyfears · 19/05/2025 11:22

Thank you, everyone, that's really reassuring.

colonoscopyfears · 20/05/2025 21:25

Doing my prep tonight. 2 hours in (started at 7) and it hasn't been anything like as bad as I expected. Lots of gurgling, no cramps, lots of... ahem... liquid. How's your appetite now, OP? Is it back yet?

Lillabetty · 21/05/2025 08:53

@colonoscopyfears how was your night?. No appetite as of yet. Going to the loo absolutely fine now dont know if this is normal or will last but my poop and farts dont smell like anything where as before my colonoscopy they smelt like petrol 🤢

OP posts:
colonoscopyfears · 21/05/2025 09:15

@Lillabetty Oh that's interesting about the smell! Have you managed to eat anything at all or are you making yourself eat? I actually got a few hours sleep, but this morning after the second dose was when things really got explosive for me, and I vomited after half the second dose. I thought that was that and that I'd have to reschedule, but the prep still worked somehow, and I'm down to see-through yellow now. Going every 3-5 mins atm so hopefully it stops before I have to get a taxi to the hospital! 😵‍💫 Thank you so much for starting this thread, I was so anxious about this colonoscopy.

Lillabetty · 21/05/2025 10:32

Im at the stage where I only eat because I have to as i have 3 children to look after. My eating is linked to other health issues I have which the doctors are investigating. I've lived with chronic stress for 9 years. Dr thinks it'd normal not to have a appetite because my brain is hyperfixated on other issues and not my tummy lol.

Yeah the second does is a killer. I left 200ml as my throat just wouldn't swallow anymore but I was pretty much empty on the first dose.

Mine was scheduled for 12:30pm my last dose I had to take at 6am and no fluid after 10am. My last poo was at 8:05am and I stopped drinking fluid then aswell I managed at bath at around 9am with no accidents. No accidents on the way to the hospital I did but a sanitary towel on and sat on a black towel just increase i also took spare underwear and leggings also just incase but I didn't need those either.

The sedation is amazing stuff! Highly recommend i was in and out of the colonoscopy room in 15mins and was in recovery for 30mins then i went home.

I had a mcdonalds for my dinner which I only ate half of because I felt full really quick, had a quick wash and went straight to bed.

Im now 4days post colonoscopy my wobbly legs have gone I'm pooing fine ive had no cramping or bleeding no itchy bum have been advised to go to the Dr's about my piles but that's another story lol.

Don't be scared. I was scared but really it was absolutely fine I agree that prep is the worst part of a colonoscopy. If I had to have another one I definitely would it was a breeze. Do come back once you've had yours fingers crossed that all is clear for you xx

My DH went through exactly the same thing OP. The blood they found in his FIT test came from his piles, hope that reassures you a bit!

Sorry, I didn't read the full thread. Hope you're OK OP!

colonoscopyfears · 21/05/2025 19:26

Back from mine. They found nothing... not even the polyp that two other doctors have confirmed is definitely there with sigmoidoscopies (it needs to be removed via surgery due to location, but still you'd expect them to comment on it). 🧐 Very uncomfortable procedure; the sedative just made me dizzy. The camera got stuck at one point on a corner. Then they didn't let me home for hours because my BP dropped too low. Glad it's over though. Eating some chicken broth soup now.
