DD is getting her hearing aid in about 6 weeks. Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect?

In terms of how it will change things for her, how she might react to it. How long it will take to get used to it, whether lip-reading will still be important for her etc. What kind of care is required for the aid itself too?

If it goes "well" she'll get one for the other ear fitted in a few months.

Am posting this in special needs too....

TIA.

Was she fitted yesterday? How was she? How was it for you? Thought of you - rang you in the morning, but you must've been out already. DS2 wanted to show you the apple tree (on the phone...!).

awwww

I'll see it next week

She had the mold taken, and, picked (well, I cajoled her into picking) a heart pattern for the the aid. (Cajoled because I dont think she really understood what she was choosing or choosing for).

Dr was great with her. Really, REALLy lovely guy. Couldnt wish for more with a dr really. DD responded quite well to him, which is good for a girl who is often quite reserved in new situations. Probably just as well that she's such an accepting, quiet soul really.

Her overall hearing is about 10-20 decibels off of 'normal/average'. The high pitched tones, at worst, have a loss of up to 80 decibels. Her right ear is worse than her left and is being fitted first. Her glue ear is fine now though!

The fitting is in 6 weeks and then they will follow up in 4 months and see about fitting the aid for her left ear. It is also very apparent that she lip-reads. This is a good thing I think.
