Tickly cough driving me insane

Please sweet mumsnetters what will make it stop?!

Two weeks ago I lost my voice completely out the blue which lasted a couple of days but since then I’ve had the most irritating cough. No phlegm. Just dry and bloody annoying.

I don’t even feel unwell!!

But I’m literally constant or so it feels. My stomach muscles hurt. My husband is close to divorcing me.

Google says Vicks on feet. Really?! I’ll try anything!

Have you tried sucking a square or two of plain dark chocolate?

SilverBlue56 · 16/04/2025 20:33

Take some co codamol before bed. Codeine suppresses the cough reflex. Don't use it for more than 3 days in a row tho.

Jakeman sweets are really good for stopping coughing. Most supermarkets sell them.

Great. I’ll try them all!

Also buttercup syrup or pastilles

Another vote for Jakemans, I don’t know why but the ones in the black packet really work!

Piriton syrup helps a cough. A GP suggested it years ago and it really works.

Look up some vocal hygiene tips - steam inhalation is great for the soft tissue of the throat/voice box, but you've got to do it regularly for it to work.

I feel you - I started with one last night at 2am. So tickly and kept waking me up.
I’ve got some Apple cider vinegar (with the mother) and will have with a bit of fresh orange juice.

I also have some pholcodeine in the bathroom somewhere and will use that if the ACV doesn’t work.

my ever lasting tickly cough turned out to be acid refulx. Try some tablets for that, you never know
