Ridiculously itchy skin and ferrous gluconate tablets

Hi everyone

so I started taking ferrous gluconate on Monday due to low iron as prescribed by the GP. I’ve been advised to take 2 tablets of ferrous gluconate once a day.

Since yesterday my skin has been severely itchy all over. Last night I barely got any sleep as it was so intense. I’ve been on ferrous fumerate in the past and don’t remember this kind of reaction. Has anyone experienced this? Is this a normal side effect that goes away or is it an allergic reaction? There is no rash or anything, just really intense itchiness all over!

Thank you for any advice

I was prescribed this when I had low iron a few years ago due to heavy perimenopause periods. And I had to stop taking them as I couldn't stand the itching, especially on my forearms. My levels are ok now since my periods have almost stopped and I've changed my diet to include more iron rich foods.

@KhakiOrca can I ask how long did the itching stay for after you stopped the tablets? I took a tablet last on Sunday morning and I’m still ridiculously itchy despite taking antihistamines! I would have thoughts they’d be out my system by now
