You really would know if you had a broken ankle, wouldn't you?

I trod on the buggy wheels today, landed very awkwardly and my ankle is killing me but not swollen at all.

DH is convinced it's broken and wants me to go to A&E. I can't face sitting around for hours especially when I'm convinced it's a sprain even though it makes me squawk to walk on it. I can rotate it albeit painfully too. If it were broken, I wouldn't be able to do that, right?

Go to your GP tomorrow if it's still painful.

I broke my foot once, by stepping on a golf ball (how nobody in my house plays golf), in about two minutes it had swollen to twice it's orginal size, with a huge lump on the site of the break, and was several interesting shades of blue....and it hurt so much it was unbelievable....but that was my foot not ankle...I'm no help!!

When i broke my ankle it did swell up but imo you should go and get it checked out if you can't put your foot down as it could be a crack in the bone or something.

Bubble99 · 12/05/2008 21:10

Sounds like a very bad sprain to me but you need to go and get it checked.

GregorSamsa · 12/05/2008 21:11

Probably is sprain. Having sprained my ankle a year ago, and broken my leg in several places this year, I can confidently say there is no comparison at all. Broken leg was agony. Far worse than giving birth to a 10lb baby with no pain relief. Sprained ankle was merely painful.

Sidge · 12/05/2008 21:11

A bad sprain can hurt as much as a break.

Try RICE:

Rest
Ice
Compression (eg Tubigrip)
Elevation

If it's not swollen and you can rotate it without screaming then it may be a bad sprain. Give it 24 hours but if in the meantime it swells, goes very blue/purple or you start to lose sensation and/or movement then get to A&E pronto.

If you're OK to take Ibuprofen, take some.

WinkyWinkola · 12/05/2008 21:22

Thank you for your brilliant reassuring words. Will shut DH up now although he's only worried.

Oh, Winky, you're so so right. If it was broken, you'd know.

That said, a sprained ankle is bloody painful, too. It's a bit odd that there's no swelling.

Just rest yourself for a couple of days. Sounds like you might have generically weak ankles.

Bubble99 · 12/05/2008 21:28

Winky. You must have delicate laydees ankles.

I've got 'cankles' and feet like a hobbit.

A bad sprain can really hurt.

Winky, I went over on my ankle yesterday and it got so painful by the evening that I ended up at my local walk-in centre. They said I've strained the ligaments on the top of my foot and the advice given by Sidge is what they've told me to do.

It's feeling a bit better today and vodka is proving a great painkiller tonight!
